Good morning bloggers,
Thunderstorms have gradually become more wide spread the last two days and they are increasing this morning. Here is a picture from the American Century Investments Skyview at around 2:45 PM Thursday:
If you were directly under one of these cumulonimbus clouds, then you likely had a downpour yesterday afternoon. We need the rain and lots of it. Today will only be a drop in the bucket. Take a look at this picture from John Cumpton in Urich, MO:
The thunderstorms this morning are forming in an area of unstable air that will be affecting us through this evening. The main disturbance will pass through around 7 or 8 PM and then the chance of rain will shut down and we will heat up. I am not sure when our next good chance of rain will arrive after this evening.
Let us know if you get hit by one of these small thunderstorms. I will update the blog later today if thunderstorms increase this afternoon or evening as the main disturbance goes by.
Have a great FRIDAY! We will go over the details of the likely heat wave that will begin this weekend on 41 Action News.

0.11 inches of rain so far in KC North just S of Gladstone.
A hole in the line is opening up nicely so our house in Olathe can be missed again
I was going to hold off turning on my sprinklers but on they go…
I got up early and watered all the flowers and shrubs in the yard and then it rained, but nowhere near enough so the watering was not a waste. Since the rain window is open until this evening, I will ask the rain gods to please deliver some more of their product to my lawn before tonight.
1/3 of an inch this morning in Western Lenexa. That will only moisten the soil to 1/3 of a foot so I will continue watering my vegetable garden!
Nice downpour here in Waldo. Hope it keeps up.
Gary, this next heat wave, how long can we expect it to last? 3 days? 4 days? 2 weeks?
2 rounds of rain here in McLouth already this morning, didn’t amount to much, radar shows more in the area. First round came in at about 6:45AM, light rain, 0.03″. Then at 7:22AM, the second round arrived and gave us another 0.06″ and some thunder. That picture of the cracks you, our cracks looked like that about 2 weeks ago, now they are a lot wider. Drought monitor shows this part of Jefferson County has gotten better in the last couple of weeks, thats B.S. It is worse here, creeks dried up, ponds dried up, wells beginning to be stressed, heck even our lagoon is going dry. Explain how a lagoon can go dry when you know you are dumping x number of gallons in it – more on laundry days – if you aren’t in a severe or extreme drought.
Here are the precip totals for July here in McLouth;
Today: 0.09 in
Storm Rain: 0.65 in
Yesterday: 0.57 in
Last 7 Days: 0.66 in
July Rain: 0.68 in

Yea, we have severe/extreme drought here, NWS does not have a clue and neither does the state climatological office.
0 day since last rain
Gary let’s hope for some rain for Friday night in the big town. Had some light rain this am in eastern Jackson County. Do you see this next heat wave lasting into next weekend? Looks like it will go to at least Thursday.
We got under one of these T-Storms last week and picked 1.23″ in about 30 minutes two miles South of Reno. It was very local. Tonganoxie and Lawrence (both 6 miles from my house) saw only a trace.
I live in Eudora and we also got an inch plus from that storm.
Rain total at my location in KC North so far today is 0.28 inches.
Raining again here in McLouth
We got under one of the pop up cells yesterday at work. It rained pretty good for 3-5 minutes. Customers who came in who live 6 blocks from work said that they got nothing. We heard thunder and saw lightning for 30-40 minutes after the rain stopped, but no more rain. Work is in Independence, off of 291 HWY, just a couple of miles north of where the I70 branches off of 291-470.
I thought I heard thunder this morning, not sure if it was thunder or large trash cans being rolled out to the curb.
From the NWS Forcast Discussion….Meso-high/extensive cloud cover over west central MO will also make it difficult to destabilize the airmass sufficiently to support convection reforming later this afternoon.
Exactly what I was afraid of, I watch the nice area of rain to the west shrink and wither !! This is just CRAZY. Absoulutely ZERO…not even one drop so far in Grain Valley.
No rain in Lee’s Summit. We went to Merriam this morning, and while there, it poured rain for about 20 minutes. Friends who live in Merriam said that it’s been raining bits and piece since yesterday.
In my cul-de-sac, our once lush green lawns are now brown, and sadly, could look worse by the end of next week.
Maybe, just maybe, it will rain again, and SOON!
Good afternoon Gary and the weather team—the rain persisted over Shawnee County for around 3 and a half hours—we picked up 1.10 here in Berryton SE of Topeka’s city limits—The rain lasted longer than I thought—they are saying more thunderstorms after 4 pm—hope the rain moves over to you in and around KC—-Michael/Berryton/Topeka
Out here in SW Topeka we picked up only .30 at my house. This was my first measurable rain since June 21. We’ve had sprinkles a few times but that’s it. Sad.
1315 hours
Gary and all:
Just got up about an hour ago – I short sleep on Fridays since at 0700 Friday my weekend starts….and recall hearing some thunder a few times during my “nap.” Checked the rain gauge anf here in the Northland just northeast of 169 and 68th, there was 0.70 down so far. Skies and radar look promising for the next couple of hours, too. A refreshing relief.
If you loop the Topeka NEXRAD right now you’ll see a left-rotating cluster of cells that resemble a tiny hurricane with an eye. Wild…
It happened again. 30 minutes or so ago, it looked like most of the metro was going to get a good quarter inch of rain, and the cell just shrunk on radar right next to my house. We’re cursed.
0.10″ total two days here in western Lenexa (87th and Woodland).
This is dire. I dont look at the radar when it is like this. It is too frustrating. We got a good shower this morning in Leawood though, maybe 1/4″ to 1/3″, but it was hardly enough. We barely missed the rain yesterday afternoon. Folks around 95th and Mission should have picked up around an inch total because they got both rains. Others areas got nothing.
I ran the sprinklers right after this morning’s rain just to supplement. I guess I need to convert my yard to zoysia grass because it is the only thing that can take the droughts here.
It’s beyond a cruel joke now… how every system dries up just as it reaches the metro… only to reform south and east of here.
Garden City/Creighton Less than .1″.
Looks like the forecast high of 94 is in serious danger…
I only went 92 degrees, but even that forecast is going to miss by 5. The high has been 87, I hope it jumped to 89, but I doubt it. Our streak may be over.
Gary
It’s a drought, people. Get used to it. Better luck next year.
Gary,
I just saw your forecast for the upcoming week and noticed that you have next Friday at 107. Do you really think that it will get that hot? Also read in your blog that you think we might break the record for heat in August. When do think this might happen? Also do you think August will stay hot or will get back to normal temps for this time of year?
Remember when you went with 95 Last night and we hit 87. And now you are coming out and saying you went 92. Why instead of giving all these forecasts to save your ass and just stick with one forecast and when you are wrong, come out and say it. Don’t give 3 different set ups during the forecast and then when 1 of the 3 scenarios hit, take credit. Maybe this is why you are losing the ratings battle in both of the setups.
Zach,
I went for 92.
Gary
Yep, no games allowed. People have respect for those who can say “i was wrong.” Instead of a cover up. Your trying to predict the future…….of course your going to be wrong sometimes…no shame in that.
Any comment from the NBC weather team about the X-class solar flare heading out way? At the very least, should make for quite a show!
