Snowstorm Begins at 3:30 AM & Snowfall Totals

Watch 41 Action News for Kansas City’s Most Accurate Forecast

Good morning bloggers,

The snow started falling on the Plaza at 3:30 AM.  This storm is intensifying as we described this morning, just as it is passing the Kansas/Missouri state line.  This will place us in some heavy bands of snow, but this system is moving fast. Here is the RUC 500 mb forecast map showing the upper low forming just southeast of Kansas City:

Cold air is blasting in from the northwest and winds are about to increase to 40 mph or stronger. We may have 50 mph wind gusts and this will cause blowing and drifting of the snow.  The surface low is strengthening and quite impressive.  take a look at this 4 AM surface map:

Let us know what you are experiencing.

The snowflake contest officially ended at 5:12 AM when Jeff Penner measured our first inch of snow.  Here is the back edge of this, what will likely be a, 5 hour snowstorm and mini-blizzard:

Thank you for participating on the Action Weather Blog.  How much snow did you receive?  And, have a great day.

Gary

    latest RAP snow forecast

  • sedsinkc

Just started snowing at my location in KC North at 3:37 am

  • nerd in lansing

1 in of snow on ground lansing, ks

  • weatherbro

Steady snow in the Waldo/Brookside area.

  • weatherfreaker

So is it true that 6-8 inches is just not possible with this storm even though it seems to be strengthening?

  • SouthOlatheGraham

Got 1/2” of snow now. Lots of blowing snow. SW OLATHE

  • teamster83

still no snow at 90th and n oak trafficway and very little wind

  • rxdo

    Gary,
E-mailed you an interesting picture about 2:55 AM from Richmond, Missouri – strong wind gusts with sleet/snow ?hail mixed in. Incredible to get woken up to that!

  • teamster83

it is now snowing at 90th and n oak and the wind has seemed to pick up a little now its a question of how much i say 2 inches

  • DirtyPaw

Started a mix of snow and sleet here in Basehor, Ks at 2:00 AM. We have at least an inch now.

  • lsx347

it’s been snowing in Shawnee for 15-20 minutes and already covering the street

  • teamster83

so is this it or do the bands get heavier

  • weatherfreaker

Not sticking in LS to streets…sounds more like rain or maybe sleet mixed with snow…wondering if it will accumulate at all?

  • weatherbro

No way we get 4-6″ from this. Nice little snow though. We have to start somewhere.

  • teamster83

i did hear in the last blog there was a discussion about adding toe kc area to the winter storm warning any more info on that

    • sedsinkc

Winter storm warning was not expanded south. Winter weather advisory was expanded south and now includes Nevada, MO over to Jefferson City.

  • theloribeth

It felt a little like we, Independence, were in the “eye” of the storm at about 0330. No winds, lightning, thunder, hail, precip of any kind; whereas half an hour ago it was a full on thunderstorm with winds, lightning, hail, and all. Then some heavy sleet followed by light snow. Now the wind is starting to pick back up and light snow is falling. I used to live in Florida and just from looking at the maps and the current conditions I decided we were virtually in the eye of the storm. I am hoping for some “thunder snow” any minute now as I am thinking we should be past the calm and in the middle of the “fun” part of the storm. I am excited, even though I do not like winter, I love weather of any exciting kind to enthusiasts.

  • kcjc777

I now have an inch of combined sleet/snow here near Zona Rosa.

    • kcjc777

Measured in several places on sidewalk and deck, pretty slick out.

      • sedsinkc

Not even a dusting yet here in KC North just S of Gladstone off of Vivion Road. I am starting to think 2 to 3 inches is much more realistic snow total than 6 inches.

  • hippygoth

Just drove in from 87th & Renner to 108th & Antioch.

Salt truck drivers are out like men possessed today (they’ve had nothing really to do for almost 2 years :) ), literally lots of salt trucks seen in Lenexa and OP and not a flake of snow on the major roads (I went 87th through to Antioch). Side roads I hit were a little worse off starting to get covered.

Visibility was starting to get a little crappy although it wasn’t blinding. Yet.

    H.

  • kcjc777

Does anyone know when the winds will begin to pick up? Still pretty light here.

  • snowfan65

Snowing hard in excelsior springs I like how the snow band is rotating rather than just blowing off to the east.

  • teamster83

I know i cannot complain but they really over played this snow cause there is no wind and the snow is not even sticking atleast not where i am.

    • sedsinkc

The snow and wind, so far in KC, are very patchy. Wind has picked up at my house in KC North, but snowfall so far not even a dusting.

      • kcjc777

I’ve had more precip, but I think a lot of it because the sleet accumulated and coated everything before it started snowing. The snow is picking up in intensity by the minute though.

Speaking of the wind, it just came out of nowhere howling and shaking my house.

  • Kole Christian

Man it is hard to see out there, good, snow, blowing snow here just north of Parkville! Kcchamps, I love the maps keep it up!

  • Kole Christian

    Teamster, where are you at?

  • teamster83

    90th and north oak trafficway
    in the northland

    • kcjc777

That would mean you were in that hole for quite a while, it kind of rotated out leaving you in it for a long time.

  • rxdo

Sleet / snow mix since 2:55 AM – Richmond, MO

  • teamster83

well how dissapointing. however on a good note its friday and i got some jack

  • teamster83

    crap its thursday

  • snowfan65

3/4 to an inch of snow in excelsior already with extremely heavy snow.

  • happydays

Parkville here too. roads reallly slick and VERY low visibility with blowing snow.

  • kcjc777

Both the wind and snow have gone up in intensity here near Zona Rosa. I can’t see the house two doors up from me.

  • teamster83

    where are you at kcjc

  • Weatherman Kumke

Wind has increased signficantly in past 10 minutes here in Olathe

  • sedsinkc

Snow and wind increasing just S of Gladstone. Finally have a dusting.

  • teamster83

my power went out and the wind has increased just north of gladstone

  • McCabe58

sleet starting to cover ground here in pleasant hill

  • Kole Christian

Here by the new gas station called The Station we have really good snow/blowing snow. So far I’d said anywhere from an inch to inch and a half

  • No bad winds yet here in Eastern Independence and it is snowing but you have to look at the streetlight to see it. VERY SLICK in spots but mostly just wet.

  • teamster83

wow i cannot even see 2 houses down the street

  • Skylar

This is definitely a “mini-blizzard”, winds have really pick up in the last 30 minutes. We have snow accumulating on the NW facing windows.

  • Kole Christian

Kcjc- yes it is, I’m a mile north of there

  • Susan

Snow has picked up and starting to accumulate on the cars~about a quarter inch. Temp must have dropped since snow is now sticking to the ground.

  • nerd in lansing

1.75in near 4H in lansing. We might have 3in to go too :)

  • sedsinkc

The blizzard-like conditions have arrived here just S of Gladstone. What a difference an hour makes.

  • teamster83

    i heard that seds

  • nerd in lansing

been snowing here since 2:30am, winds are terrible roads are snowpacked in my neighborhood. I’ve only been driving a year, driving in this must suck.

  • SouthOlatheGraham

    2” in Olathe

  • wags

I just saw a car spin completely sideways live on 41 as Major Miles talked over a MO-DOT cam. Roads look slick.

  • Skylar

The power just went out across the street from me and mine just flickered a bit.

  • nerd in lansing

Rabbit just ran by in a 40+gust, poor thing.

  • sedsinkc

It’s official: at 5:12 am, the Snowflake Contest ended…

    • kcvegas

Regarding the Snowflake contest: Can’t wait for the announcement! At my sisters B-Day dinner last night she said she entered 5:00am–that has to be close!

  • westonhere

measured in a bunch a places here in Weston,mo 2.25 in areas not affected by wind and about 1.5 in wind driven areas roads are awful snow packed with ice underneath because of not being able to pre-treat much. MIN Blizzard for sure can’t hardly see the house across the street!

  • Susan

The wind just picked up and whistled through the
windows and everything shook. Snow is increasing and cars are now all covered. I sure hope our lights don’t go out here in Eastern Independence.

  • Hockeynut69

The drive in was OK. But conditions are getting worse. The roads are slushy and combine that with the winds, it makes for some dangerous driving. Fortunately, there weren’t many cars on the road when I came in. I can see big problems in the 6-9 rush hour. My path was southbound 435 from Liberty area to the Bannister area. Good luck to all and be smart and safe!

  • westonhere

By the way I hope the power don’t go out.Its been constantly flickering for over an hour now.

  • Kole Christian

When the wind gust, it’s almost impossible to see more than a 100 feet

  • Alex Pickman

Wind is insane here in St. Joe now and I would say at least a couple inches on the ground. Snow coming down very heavy and a lot of blowing snow. Roads are covered and some big drifts already. What a first snow!!

  • Kole Christian

Did you just mention me? I’m at 45 hwy and I-435

  • Kole Christian

This is a powerful storm but remember the ’09 Christmas blizzard it was about 60 in Clumbia and 9 degrees!! At KCI

    • sedsinkc

That was a powerful storm, the most powerful snowstorm I’ve witnessed in Kansas City in terms of wind, extreme cold, and snowfall rate. Been in KC area most of the time since 1994.

  • Skylar

    Blue Valley schools are closed

  • MIZZOU

We are smack dab in the middle of this comma head, a good 3 to 4 more hours of snow I would say is likely

  • sedsinkc

I can see the models were not making stuff up when earlier tonight they kept painting a snowfall accumulation bullseye around Cameron. There has been an extremely heavy band of snow rotating basically in place for over an hour in that area.

  • Hockeynut69

Other stations website doing a better job at posting school closings. Come on KSHB.

  • DKCJPC

11th and Walnut downtown – visibility 4 blocks, snowing hard, winds really howling. Changed over at 4:30A.

  • Skylar

Gary expecting another 2-3″ on top of what has fallen already.

  • StormyWX

The power has flickered several times now out here in KCK.

  • bewild79

Does anyone know how you would find out about if courts are closed in maysville?

  • Alex Pickman

Visibility is very low here in St. Joe right now with very heavy snow and intense wind. Just an absolute whiteout. I just went out to measure, and could find a location without a snowdrift. I would say we are around 3-4 inches, but all the drifts are between 7 and 15 inches.

  • Alex Pickman

And I just saw we just got a 54 mph wind gust!!

  • SouthOlatheGraham

29.f and wind gust up to 50MPH. With a little over 2” of snow here.

  • teamster83

    were about over arent we

  • Susan

We need to name this “mini” blizzard since it has affected the whole viewing area!

  • McCabe58

No, still probably have 2 hours… back edge is falling apart it looks like though

  • Hockeynut69

Maybe the Mayans are right about the end of the world. We actually had some decent thunderstorms last night and good snow today. OK that may be a bit extreme but hooray for all of the precipitation!

  • bewild79

This is just really gonna suck if we drive from gladstone to maysville and its cancelled…there is just a generic message playing right now

  • mattmaisch

Well it looks like this storm is performing precisely the way Gary said it would. No surprise here. It appears his forecast will be spot on regarding snowfall, timing of snowfall, wind, and duration of storm. Good luck getting those results from “the other guy.” A lot of people were pretty concerned when they couldn’t see it with there own eyes last night, but it’s right on track. The morning commute figures to be a bit rough.

That said, on a not so bright note for those of us who love the snow, the 06Z GFS backed WAY off (again) on the storm for next week. The overnight Euro still keeps the storm in our area, but the GFS passes it by as nothing more than a wave. Seems like the computers are having a tough time with this one.

Hope everyone is enjoying the snow today.

    Matt

  • teamster83

it looks like its starting to break down

  • SouthOlatheGraham

Got 2.75” of snow now. Snowing still.

  • zimbokc

Gary just gave the bloggers a shout-out for our comments over the last few days! Major props especially to Skylar and kcchamps for their valuable info.

  • kcjc777

I just went out and measured (nearly killed myself in the process), I have 4.5 inches here near Zona Rosa/Weatherby Lake.

    • kcjc777

Just checked another spot because I thought that seemed a bit high, close to 4.25 ish but I’m pretty surprised. I haven’t been out but I hear traffic is a mess up here and I can see why, near-whiteout conditions for almost two hours now, seems like it may be starting to lighten up a but though.

  • melafinatu

White out conditions at KCI. Airport vehicles getting stuck. Check your flights b4 u leave!

  • Kole Christian

Like I said, what till this evening to see what the models are saying about next week. They’ll get a better handle on it once this storm is past.

  • Freeze Miser

Still snowing and blowing in Independence with temp at 28 degrees! It’s a wonderful day. I am still hoping for an awesome storm on Christmas!

  • k10k7

1.5” in NW Olathe, 26 degrees and winds from 17 to 31 mph.

Looking forward to the model watching for next week……

  • k10k7

    Photo attempt.

  • melafinatu

Just uploaded video of snow/airplane at KCI to KSHB

  • l lohr

good job with the forecast gary. nailed. it.

i started to doubt the eventuality of the backside snow during the t-storms last night. but i saw the tail really reorganizing as the 850mb low began to turn the corner and elongating. at that point i was wondering if it might be snowing longer into day–past noon.

nope. u were right with that too. good job.

personally, i’m glad we have such great, enthusiastic met’s here in kc.

  • melafinatu

Make sure to check flights, cancel and delays

  • Nice job Gary! Spot on forecast. Just got to work downtown. I70 was SLOW, but not too bad. Side roads are pretty bad, with ice under a couple inches of snow. Lots of people stuck on hills.

  • Kole Christian

Great forecast! I’m impressed, considering most people thought it was going to bust or at most a dusting

  • jjoel

Great job Gary and 41 weather team. I was curious if we would get this storm or the dusting that the others were saying. I can say that you kncked this forecast out of the park. Hope you get some well deserved rest this weekend.

  • Curiosity

Just made the drive up 635 from Shawnee to the Northland. It was a slalom course weaving in between all the spun out cars in the way. I’ll bet it turns into a parking lot as more commuters try to get through.

  • kellyinkc

Ahhhhh, I’m near Macon, MO just rain. A good t storrm though a bit ago.

  • kellyinkc

Guess I will see snow when I get back Friday

  • melafinatu

Very good forecast Gary. “Downplay” met, MT got it totally wrong. Great job KSHB!

  • blue8091

Very strong wind gusts here in OP – 119th/Antioch – woke me up over an hour ago and quite a bit of snow on the ground too! Great forecasting Gary and the KSHB team – never had any doubts!

  • R-Dub

About 2″ here near downtown OP. Wind not really that bad. Good forecast overall although calling it a “mini-blizzard” is a real stretch. More like a typical KC snow.

  • kellyinkc

So what did the “other” guy have to say now that it DID snow…..

  • melafinatu

“other guy” not there now…he’s at home still in denial

  • kellyinkc

Lol, I am in Shelby county visiting the inlawws. I just saw its in a Winter storm warning! There’s hope yet. My phone is reading 40 degrees though

  • davidmcg

Can’t tell how much snow we got here in McLouth, wind is blowing it all over. But we do have 2′ snowdrifts everywhere. Winds are 24mph gusting to 32.2, our highest gust was 43.0 at 3:43AM. My son spun out on 59 highway south of Oskaloosa and ended up in the ditch.

  • Freeze Miser

Down to 25.9 here in eastern Independence. The wind is surprisingly strong…I can feel it in the house. Come on Christmas storm!

  • Kole Christian

I’m of the option that storms sometimes train with the previous storm. I’m saying this in the hopes that we get more snow on Christmas Day.

  • Kole Christian

And maybe this storm is a sign that we’re breaking out of the drought

  • Adam Penney

06z GFS dropped our storm for next week. Im not buying it. Expect it to come back on the next run.

  • mmitchell33

Just finished our driveway in south OP (141st/Quivira). Perhaps 2″ of damp snow but it is difficult to measure with all of this wind! Enjoyed reading the blog yesterday. It has been a few years.

  • brucer8774

yeah, Adam……..I saw that too on the 06z GFS….the Euro dropped it too……..bummer……..

    let’s get that puppy back!!

  • R-Dub

Nws discussion said something interesting about next week…said the euro model had it going too far south to affect KC.

  • frigate

Well…I hope all the snow lovers are happy with the mess out there this morning…accidents everywhere…I just hope no one gets seriously injured. On a brighter note…Gary…you nailed the forcast. I too, saw the other guy saying last night only a dusting to an inch. Not that I’m happy about this stuff…but your still the man!!!!

  • Adam Penney

The Euro didn’t drop the storm like the GFS. Just had it going a bit further south. The 06z GFS had the storm just completely gone.

  • Skylar

With drifts of 1-2 feet and about 2″ in the scraped out places, we probably got 2-3″ near Johnson County Executive. Still a few intense gusts pushing by although it is dying down a little now.

  • goodlifegardens

Garden City/Creighton Looks like we had ice before snow. Hard to tell how much snow because of the wind but I’m guessing maybe 2″. Wouldn’t be a bad day if it weren’t for the wind. I hope all of the snow lovers have it out of their systems and we can have a warm winter the rest of the way. Rain, YES! Snow, NO!

  • weatherbro

Next weeks storm just vanishes on the gfs lol. Hope it comes back here soon.

  • StormyWX

So then is it odd that this “storm” that was showing up for next week on the GFS just completely vanished?

  • kellyinkc

Snowing good now in Clarence MO. Not much wind yet

  • Skylar

The system is really impressive on visible satellite, it looks like a strong tropical storm! “http://aviationweather.gov/adds/satellite/displaySat.php?region=ICT&isingle=mult_big&itype=vis”

  • Adam Penney

Yes, its odd. Did this a few runs back. I fully expect the storm to return on the models.

  • Alex Pickman

    Hey Gary,

    5:12 AM, not PM ;-)

  • pskc

EXCELLENT coverage as usual Gary and the team, best in KC. What is this nonsense about another winter storm around x-mas eve :)

  • kellyinkc

There’s the wind now. This will be good

  • zimbokc

Great job with your coverage today, Gary! Also, love the snow vest sighting today.

  • hushpook

    Well done, Professor Lezak!

  • salukiman

2 ” here in Cleveland Mo

    Wind protected deck

  • trinlivco

All I can say is mother nature is amazing. Little moisture and drought for months and what to we get on Dec19&20 rain, thunder and lightning, hail, powerful wind and then snow, and blowing snow. Got to love it. Here in Chillicothe over night about.70 rain and we have about 2″ to 4″ of snow, really hard to tell because its blowing so much. Wind is bad 30+ M.P.H. Keep us informed Gary and every one stay safe. TR

  • Homer

    Wind still gusting here.

  • tmorrow

Mukustink is conspicuously absent from the blog right now…if you do not praise Gary for nailing this forecast, then you can never criticize him again…

    • chopperHD

not to mention he was absolutely wrong in his prediction stating we would get passed by and criticizing Lezak for being wrong…it is and has been the same for as long as I have been reading this blog. He and tush work as a one man wrecking team attacking folks non stop

      • mukustink

Some of us have other things to do then be on a blog all day. Chipper SD as usual you have no idea what your talking about. I said that we would get 2-4 inches in the immediate metro BEFORE Gary changed his forecast to the same. I saw that it was slowing and digging deeper so I changed my forecast around 3 in the afternoon yesterday. So unless you know what talking about I would suggest you keep your mouth shut dumass! You are nothing but a poor person stuck in mommy’s basement.

tmorrow the same to you dumass. You hae no idea what your talking about either. You and Chipper sd can hug each other in mommy’s basement and make out with each other and do what ever you guys do with each other.

Gary I had been saying a dusting to an inch. Then I saw that the storm was digging and slowing down. I then changed it to 2-4 for the immediate metro. The change was before you changed your forecast. So I will say 2-4 and I hope I don’t regret it in the morning!

I will expect an apology from you two idiots!

    • hushpook

That is so true. Its fair to respectfully call a professional on an error they shouldn’t have made, as long as you praise them when they do good work.

  • kellyinkc

Looks like radar is showing snow diminishing. :(

  • McCabe58

So is the gfs the only model not showing next weeks storm anymore?

    • mattmaisch

New Euro still an hour away, but the last version of the Euro had the storm, but also took the ULL down into Texas.

  • stjoeattorney

Okay, it is all done. We have 6+ inches. Snow drifts between 18 inches and 24 inches. The wind has begun to subside a little bit the first inch of the snow was a heavy slushy snow, but the rest of it is much lighter.

  • chopperHD

    Gary and Team….Great job!

KCCHAMPS…thanks for the maps, glad to see you still around

  • stjoeattorney

On moosture .40 last Friday, .40 before midnight and and another .45 after midnight. So in a week 1.25 inches of rain. We still need part of it to melt into the thirsty ground!!

  • Adam Penney

12z GFS, thus far, is not looking good for next week. Puzzling..

  • kettle corn

KSHB 1 other guy 0.. Great job Gary

  • weatherbro

Say bye bye to next weeks storm. Still hope this is a beginning to a wetter pattern.

  • Adam Penney

12z GFS does have a storm, but takes it much further south, leaving KC with next to nothing.

    Thats two consecutive runs.

  • SouthOlatheGraham

    3.5” of Snow IN olathe.

  • mattmaisch

Well like Adam said, the 12Z GFS does reintroduce the feature of a significant storm around Christmas, but the ULL dives into Texas leaving the city of Memphis with an incredibly rare and major winter storm starting around Christmas night. At least the storm is reappearing, now we just have to work on the track..

    Matt

  • kellyinkc

Still snowing good here about 2″ I brushed of the car.
So has the other met come out of hiding?

  • Farmgirl

La Cygne has about 1/2 inch of snow. So hard to measure and it is whipping around every where here on the farm.

  • mukustink

Gary looks like WE nailed the forecast. Good thing WE changed the 2-4 for the immediate metro. Looks like an A plus on this storm. Once I saw it digging harder andslower I’m glad I changed my “guess” to 2-4 for the metro. Some bloggers on here have no idea what hey are talking about like chipper sd and some other fool. It’s all good because they look like fools :). Great job on the forecast.

  • Kole Christian

Please do not attack other bloggers.

    • mukustink

Hey Kole where was this when I was attacked earlier? So why don’t you go police another blog or something.

      • Kole Christian

They were pointing out that you were wrong. Obviously you need to realize you were the one using words like dumbass and tool. It sucks to be wrong. But we should not live in a “everybody’s a winner society.”

      • chopperHD

you need to look up the definition of attack,,,you call names and ridicule folks like a high school gossip queen…I stated the facts, you had in fact posted a few days ago and said we would get nothing and you do come on here and attack people..Facts

        • mukustink

Chipper sd your an idiot. Read the blogs plural. Gary changed his forecast 3 times. Fact. I changed my forecast FACT. You need some medicine. I hope you don’t own a gun because you are truly unstable and being in mom’s basement maybe you have some co going to your brain. It’s all good as I was correct and so was Gary. You are incorrect and just an idiot.

  • Kole Christian

Kustink changed his forecast on Wednesday to closer match Gary’s when Gary was predicting at least 2 inches for the past couple of days. Kustink, before yesterday you were saying we were going to get next to nothing. Pretty sure you didn’t nail anything. Good job on your nowcasting though…

    • mukustink

As usual you don’t know what you are talking about. I changed to 2-4 inches before Gary moved his 2-4 for the metro. Why don’t you go read the previous blogs so you know what you are talking about. Your an idiot as well. Learn how to read and comprehend before you post. Your another jackass who doesn’t know what he is talking about.

      • mukustink

So I guess Gary was “nowcasting” as well? He changed his totals after I changed mine so I guess he was “nowcasting”. You just blasted Gary with your ridiculious comment. I think you owe Gary and I an apology. Your an Idiot!

  • Kole Christian

He change his forecast by about a half an inch an you bump yours from nothing to 2-4. I do not need to read the blogs. You may do so your self.

  • Finally got out to measure and shovel the drive…Looks like Raytown got just over 3 inches. I’m going to log it as 3.25 inches for this storm. Very wet snow initially, much drier toward the end of the storm.

The wind left almost bare spots in some areas, and windblown drifts of up to 8 inches. (Snowplow drifts of over 12 inches)

  • Well it was nice why it lasted. Now we’re back to the antics…

    • chopperHD

Sorry guys…Im just going to ignore him from this point forward. I just get tired of reading the same childish antics from the same few over and over.

      • mukustink

Yea you being the main child.

      • I hear you Chopper. Probably the best, no matter how difficult it is. lol

        • mukustink

It is difficult to ignore a idiot like chipper sd who spews crap and attacks other bloggers with incorrect facts. I agree Scotty but I will try as hard as it is to defend ones self.

          • No, he pointed out that you were wrong. Way wrong, on your prediction up until just 24 hours ago. You mock Gary and the station frequently. Talk about things that really aren’t appropriate(like station staffing). It’s nonstop with you and your twin(who’s conspicuously absent of late). Chopper wasn’t attacking, just giving a deserved ribbing for all your rants about how wrong Gary was. Then YOU predictably started name calling and attacking. And the names are OUT OF LINE! Sure, maybe Chopper should not have called you out. But those of us that have been here for some time, can’t hardly blame him. Anyway, why don’t we all start fresh. This is a great weather blog. No more name calling please.

  • Adam Penney

Well, the weather discussion was fun while it lasted.

Back to the personal attacking. Knew it was only a matter of time.

Looking forward to Gary’s blog in the morning. I can’t wait to see how much hype there will be towards Wednesday’s slim chance of the white stuff. Should be a good read and laugh

MUKU…Enough said..this was one of many of your posts just 3 days ago..

    • mukustink

That’s the point 3 days ago. It was 3 days ago. I looked at data and made a call. Ithe looked at new data and made a different call just like Gary does everyday. Did Gary change his forecast totals for the metro? YES he did just like I did. Just goes to prove your an idiot, Where was your prediction? NONE. Why because your an idiot who can’t do anything but keep your head up Gary’s rear end all the time. Your an idiot just admit it.

  • OlatheMatt

    Nice snow angel brett anthony

  • mukustink

Yes it’s a shame as usual Chipper sd and koley come in and start trouble. Like Mikey says I’m just defending myself from morons and idiots. Way to go chipper sd Koley. Give each other a hug and kiss and enjoy mom’s meatloaf.

  • weatherbro

Just ignore him lol. We can still talk about the weather. After all, this is a WEATHER blog where we talk about weather.

    • mukustink

Yea just ignore Chipper sd and Koley. I was talking weather until THEY decided to start crap. So put the blame where it belongs. OH yea!

  • melafinatu

Ok, that’s enough. Time for some people to be kicked off blog

  • I agree with you Adam. I hadnt come in here for months becuase of the personal attacking etc going on. Dont have time to wade thru it all searching for decent weather related topics.

Sun is coming out here in Olathe! What a difference a few hours makes

  • melafinatu

I would say grow up, but I don’t think we are dealing with adults here.

  • mukustink

So Chipper sd what’s your forecast for next week’s possible storm? Care to give one?

Like I said yesterday this is going north. Looking at Sat you can see it tracking north. We MAY get a dusting in the immediate metro. Looks like St. Joe will get it again. Oh well maybe next week we may get something. Snow lovers will have their heart broken with this one. Nothing to see here move on…

Gary I had been saying a dusting to an inch. Then I saw that the storm was digging and slowing down. I then changed it to 2-4 for the immediate metro. The change was before you changed your forecast. So I will say 2-and I hope I don’t regret it in the morning!

Gary looks like you went with 2-4 for the metro. I changed my “guess” about an hour ago after seeing that this thingis slowing and digging further then previous models had suggested. I hope I don’t look stupid in the morning

  • olathe-snowkid

You said that when the storm started. Stop with the constant negative posts please.

    • mukustink

Hey kiddy the snow storm didn’t start until 3:30 this morning correct? I changed mine 15-20 minutes earlier then Gary changed his. So I guess Gary changed his forecast whne the storm started as well? Please answer the question.

      • olathe-snowkid

he changed his by 1/2 an inch. what does gary have to do with this? it about you and your stupid and annoying posts.

        • mukustink

Gary shifted his 2-4 inches to include all of the metro at 5:00 pm Go read. You stated I changd mine when the storm started so I guess Gary did as well. Did you not read what you wrote? Your post are stupid and annoying because you are using incorrect facts. What grade are you in?

          • nbell_13

What grade are you in? Judging by your piss-poor grammar and spelling, inability to take any criticism (but can dish plenty out), thinking you’re (see that? that’s called a contraction. It means “you are”) always right, and your (no contraction there, as the word “are” would not be correct) all-around childish behavior, I would venture to guess 3rd.

      • mukustink

Imagine that no reply. Facts always win!

  • weatherbro

  • TeacherInKC

I am a long-time reader but this is my first post. I couldn’t help myself, this back-and-forth is ridiculous. Guys and gals mukustink is obviously out for attention and reacts to negative posts by throwing a massive temper-tantrum. I see this everyday in my job so let me give you some advice: ignore him and he will go away. Everything he does and says is designed to get some attention but he will stop if you all stop giving him what he wants. Ignore his nonsense and he will go looking for it elsewhere.

To those of you that provide great updates and share your knowledge of met science, thank you so much! You have no idea how many teachers and students in the metro area depend on your forecasts! And to Gary and the best weather team in KC, great job and thanks for all that you do!

  • Adam Penney

Re-thinking things a bit on next week. We now have snowpack. Much more to the north. Cold air is coming for next week.

Problem with that is, it’s going to shove the baroclinic zone further to the south. Just like the MN storm a few weeks ago created a snow pack, then this storm followed suit just to the south. I do believe next weeks storm will continue the further south trend, and we could be missed.

Still ~150 hours out, so plenty of change can occur. These are my thoughts for now.

    • I agree. Looks like the cold is going to push, or pull, the activity to the South. At least with it being South, it will have to come back, right? haha

    • Supercell

There will be no snow left on the ground in the viewing area next Tuesday when the next storm arrives. By the time Christmas rolls around, the snow cover line will be back up in Nebraska and southern Iowa.

Models will handle this on Saturday and Sunday.

  • willy

mukustink is either a young, ingorant and immature person or some dude who suffers from ‘little mans’ envy. I bet mukustink needs to drive a BIG truck and uses a stall instead of urinal due to the insecurity. But he comes across as a big blow hard on a blog due to need to justify the fragile ego…

    • mukustink

neither willy. Ijust defend myself from idiotic statements from peopek on here who think they know everything. I am very secure and very happy just can’t stand ignorant unjustified attacks with facts that are totaly incorrect as I have proven so save your psyco babble for another time.

  • mukustink

The models have been all over the place with the “potential” storm for next week. I don’t think anyone will have a handle on it until Sunday. One run the models have it and the next runs they don’t. Going to have to wait to see what is out west in the pacific.

    • I agree. And now the New Years storm looks to be trending further South also. Let’s hope the first one pops back up soon. But I’m not feeling confident about that happening.

  • weatherbro

    People, come on.

  • mukustink

I would not bet on a white Christmas. To many variables in the models.

I am not sway with each model run. Nothing will get a good hold of this until Sunday.

  • Adam Penney

    Fire,

I agree. It will be the weekend before this is decided. I’m just using knowledge based on what I know, and how these things trend.

The Euro will be filtering out shortly. Hoping it trends north, but it’s been sticking to its southern solution consistently as of late.

    • I discussed this storm with George last weekend. I though there was a pretty good chance of some snow, but on Saturday it did not look like what ended up happening at all. So, yes, let’s see how this next system looks as we get a day or two closer. There is a storm system there, but what will it look like?

  • MikeL

Looks like the 12z Euro is still keeping the next storm south. Still, the models are all over the place and I agree that over the weekend things (hopefully) will become clearer.

  • Adam Penney

Yep, models are not good today. Will try and keep patient…lol

  • McCabe58

Why is it always that after a storm the conversation is about how close or far away Gary’s prediction was? He did a damn good job, unlike the other guy. Lets just leave it at that and move on to the next one, please. It really is quite ignorant to call names on a weather blog lol… As for next weeks possible storm, is it trending so far south that we aren’t even in it at all?

  • Alex Pickman

We easily have 6 inches of snow here in St. Joe!

  • Kole Christian

This is going to go north I think. I would guess that we will get rain if anything and maybe a dusting if that. The roads will be to warm for any accumilation on them and it would only stick to grass if anything. Looks like we will have to wait to see what next Tuesday/Wednesday brings.

    McCabe,
I’m posting maps the best I can. I prefer KCChamps maps because they show more snow. The 2-4 seems good for now, especially for those of us on the north side.

    I’ll admit that I said 2-4, not 2-3

    • mukustink

Koley what’s your point? That’s what my thoughts were 3 days before the storm. Gary didn’t give totals 3 days before the storm did he? The fact is that I forecasted correctly the total amount yesterday just like Gary did. I fail to see why my thoughts 3 days before the event amount to anything? That’s ok keep spending time going back and reading old post. Your “guess” was from maps that chumps was posting. Does it bother you that I forecasted it correctly just like Gary? It’s all good. Facts are facts.

      • RickMckc

        MUKUSTINK,

I think the reason you are getting so much negative feedback today is because you often talk down to people and many of your posts are characterized with snark. I could pull many examples from other blogs but I’ll just give two:

In the post above, you refer to “Chumps.” Is that necessary? No. And it is disrespectful. He’s a real person who contributes something to this blog that MANY people like. People wonder where he is when storms are coming. Calling him “chumps” makes you look like a jerk.

For example, olathe-snowkids’ quotes of your posts …

Those posts come across as condescending towards people who post maps (including me, btw) and making fun of people who (along with the Pleasant Hill NWS) were looking at the possibilities for next week. Is it necessary for you to do that? No. And, again, it makes you look bad.

Just to be clear, I have no axe to grind with you personally. I just want to encourage you to find better ways to say things. Yesterday was one of the best days ever on this blog and it was because people were civil and kept it focused on weather. I would love for you to be part of that – you have lots of good observations and good things to contribute when you want to.

        Peace,

I can tell Gary is still dreaming of a white Christmas. I am too! There’s still time for the models to trend back toward the a storm on the 25th. I’d be happy with one of those big poofy flaked, slow falling snow. Wouldn’t that be fantastic?

  • Kole Christian

    Well said Rick

  • Kole Christian

Not looking too good for next weeks storm, I’m gonna go ahead and predict 5 inches at KCI on the 26. The storm will slow down the same as this one.

Just watched another station’s met. who is still in denial. He says we only received a “little skiff of snow” on top of the rain and sleet, and that is what caused all of the problems today. He says that the 2.5 inches of snow measured was mostly frozen rain and sleet. Seriously? I’m not an expert, but I know my measuring stick went easily through 3 inches of white substance, and it wasn’t sleet. I guess its his story and he’s sticking with it!

    • beckysma

Wow. That’s some denial considering the hours of white stuff falling from the sky.

    • mattmaisch

If that is truly how he responded to his horrific failure of a forecast, especially a forecast that was only 6 hours prior to the onset of a storm, then quite frankly, he should be relieved of his duties effective immediately. Just consider how poorly informed his loyal followers were this morning. He is honestly the 2012 version of the Chiefs when it comes to forecasting the weather. Remarkable.

  • Weatherwatcher

    Good evening, Gary and staff,

First of all, I want to thank you for all of the hard work you and your fellow meterologists do for the us in the metro area. I, along with my students, this year, have decided to remain away from the blog. We are doing our research on the weather affecting Kansas City in a different manner. In September, I asked my classes if they wanted to continue working with the blog, and almost all of them said no. The main reason was negativity… Many of the bloggers are really intelligent, but there are those few who continue to spew insults day after day. Today, was a perfect example of that, and I, as their teacher, need to show them better examples of how adults should act. We miss the interactions of the bloggers, but we’ll survive.
Thanks again for all you do, to the bloggers who are positive and informed, keep up the good work!

    • mattmaisch

Hopefully your comments will resonate with the readers. What a shame that students will be deprived of this opportunity due to the actions of such a small few. (Isn’t that how it always goes though!) Gary regularly makes reference to people being removed from the blog. After some of the stuff I read this afternoon, it’s time to drop the hammer!

      Matt

  • zimbokc

Please ban mukustink from this blog.

        • sportsfreaked

Sure then why don’t you ban Chopper HD, and Kole Christian, and Tusch, and Mower Mike. Not sticking up for anyone but Mukustinks gae props to Gary for hitting the forecast and patted himself on the back for hitting the foecast then Chopper Hd and Kole “jumped” on him for post he made about the storm 3 days ago from what I’ve seen. He (muku)fought back. If I was attacked Iwould fight back as well. I’ve seen Mower MIke fight back and he gets a pass from all of the “followers”. For goodness sake it’s a blog not a research or science project. I was on this blog since it began. I was here when pvt murphy and the good morning guy and others that I can’t remember. Good bloggers who have left not because of muku or tusch or any other blogger for that matter. They left because they got tired of when people disagreed with Gary or pointed out that he missed a forecast “loyal” bloggers would jump on them. Mowermike being one of the main ones to “jump”. Now I’ve noticed that Mowermike does not do that anymore but he did in the past along with others he was not the only one.

Can MUku be rather direct yes he can. A person being objective can see why he felt he was attacked. There are people on here I can’t stand to read their post so when I see their names I just skip over it. If he or anyone bothers you that much just skip over their post. Just because it’s there doesn’t mean you have to read it. Come on folks get real. It’s a blog and a public blog at that. If you want a private club then form a private blog where you have to be invited to join. Then you can have only those who agree with everyone else and everyone can be buddies. Tust me I’m not taking sides just a simple observation. Some of you act like muku is making you read what he post. IT’S SIMPLE JUST SKIP HIS OR OTHERS YOU DON’T LIKE. It’s very easy to do try it sometime. OK I’m done with my soapbox for the year. Have a good weekend. Here’s hoping for a white Christmas!!!!!

          • zimbokc

            Is this middle school?

          • jrfan830

I believe the “good morning guy” was Bill in Lawrence.

          • mattmaisch

Nobody said don’t defend yourself if you’re attacked, but I believe you’re missing the point of the initial post. A teacher said that they were no longer going to use the blog as a teaching mechanism, not because of a lack of quality content, but rather due to the type of behavior that was on display this afternoon.

I have also been here since the blog was unveiled seven or eight years ago, but don’t feel like the blog is better for the type of garbage the educator above is referencing. There is no need for it, and if people feel a need to engage in those types of discussions, they can take it elsewhere. I doubt anybody would miss it. Just my $.02.

          • chopperHD

            Ed,

I didn’t attack or call names. That is the primary difference. I admit, I commented on his constant negativity and criticism of gary and the team and shouldn’t have however, I definitely don’t call names.I believe there is a major difference in a personal attack and pointing out that a persons prediction was wrong. If you read all of his replys today as well as every other day, everybody is an idiot or a chump or any other name he can think of.

At any rate, Im ignoring it from this point forward

  • davidmcg

I for one was surprised when I woke up at 6AM. I woke up and checked the weather out the window. Looked like all the rain had turned to ice and there wasn’t any snow falling. But at 6AM is was snowing, blowin’ hard. At 8:30 the snow I think was done and it was just blowing around. Hard to say how muchwe got out here in McLouth, but we did have 3 foot snow drifts. A lot of my rural electric friends lost power up in Winchester, Nortonville and a friend lost power east of Tonganoxie, lucky for us we stayed on. My son spun his car on the highway and off the road. Hope you all were safe and warm today. Gary was right, we had snow, ice, rain and all.

  • Emaw

I believe the official total from KCI was 2.5″. I saw an inflated total on the the blog this morning of 3.5″ from south Olathe,(bogus). I live in north Olathe and we got 2″ at most. On paved surfaces it was definetly less than 2″, barely enough to plow! I also saw an entry from a blogger at 3:45 am from the northland area and he said it was’nt snowing, then an entry from the same person at 3:50am and he said he had 2″, Hmmmmm. I also work with a guy from the LaCygne area and when he left his house at 6:00am there was no snow yet, he said he didn’t run into it until about Paola. The hypocrisy that is present on this blog from the kool-aid drinkers is also nauseating at times.

  • Kole Christian

I agree, the rules need to be enforced now. And if I said anything to offend anyone I apologize, and I should be removed too. I joined to interact with the other bloggers and Gary. I have enjoyed commenting on the blog, but I don’t want others turned away because of nasty comments.

  • thomasmidwest

From now on we should just ignore the trolls eventually they will leave, we can all hope right.

  • Emaw

I may have mis-understood the entry from the blogger at 3:50am, he may have been forecasting 2″, if so my bad. Point is is there are many on here who worship Gary and they are some of the worst offenders when it comes to the “rules”, it’s almost cult like at times.

  • muwxman

I can’t believe I forgot about this blog. You will do that when you are away busy studying at college. Its also been a few years since I have followed the LRC, so I plan on doing that again this winter. Will definitely say we picked up more snow in the SE portion of the viewing area and towards Mid-Mo. Will say this as well, not sure what to believe in for the next storm. Right now I am looking more towards the upper air pattern and seeing how much that changes. Once the storm begins to get sampled by the upper air sites, I will focus on the finer details. Will definitely be interesting to watch.

What Christmas storm? Unfortunately there isn’t anything that indicates a major storm at this point like we had on the models for the past several days. I hope things change, but at this point I am afraid a big storm is highly unlikely looking at the latest trend. Wish I had better news…

  • thomasmidwest

I use “instantweathermaps.com” just click maps and u can see gfs or nam or euro

  • Adam Penney

Any chance of a significant winter storm near christmas has become increasingly unlikely today.

But that’s today. Yesterday had a storm. Still 3-4 days before this really gets locked in. But as of now, I’m not very hopeful.

  • MCIRamp

After reading all these posts, I have just 2 things to say:
    1. Gary posted a snowfall map Monday that was pretty close to what happened today without much deviation or adjustments.
    2. I predicted 1-2″ near KCI and I came up short of the actual total. Props to all whom contributed valuable information, knowledge and intuition in trying to pin down this storm. IMO, is what makes this blog so fun!

  • chopperHD

    Gary,

If I remember correctly, you stated the cycle length is anywhere from 50-54 days? If memory serves, we had a storm that produced around an inch of rain approx 45-46 days prior to Christmas day. Do you believe this possible storm is the same system cycling through again?

  • mattmaisch

00Z 500 Mb chart looking very interesting for Christmas!

  • Adam Penney

    Matt,

Definitely agree. It’s not perfect. Storm isn’t very strong, and we would need more of a negative tilt, but the 500mb chart did show drastic improvement on the 0z run!

  • mattmaisch

    Adam,

The track is still a bit too far south too, but compared to what we have seen the last several runs, it’s a significant improvement. Also, when I posted that about the 500 Mb chart, I hadn’t looked at any surface data yet. It’s a fair distance south of here, but like you said, drastic improvement.

  • Adam Penney

Yep. Need more negative tilt. I had a problem with how the surface features matched up with mid levels. Seemed a bit off. To me, the more important thing at this point is the track of the low and the evolution of the upper level storm. This was a stronger solution, so it’s encouraging in the least.

Looked like Gary wanted to show some excitement about the run on the weather cast…but kept in check pretty well. ;)

    Still many runs to go…

  • Adam Penney

    Sounds good Matt.

0z GFS also displaying the New Years storm again as well.

  • 2.5 inches on a wind protected porch in NKC

  • HeavySnowBlowingSnow

Just my two cents: I like and respect Gary for being PASSIONATE about what he does…that is the first and foremost reason I like Gary, watch 41 for weather, and check out this blog. Gary could be the second or maybe even third most accurate forecaster, and I would still like and respect him for his passion. I’m not a kool-aid drinker. I remember having a discussion with a co-worker who said that he watches Gary simply because he believes Gary would work for free…I was like, “yeah, exactly.”

Also, I love and appreciate the bloggers on here who know/understand/share the much more technical stuff…and share their opinions and insights. I mean, I am pretty much adequate at interpreting a live radar image and that’s about it! So whether one of those other (smarter) bloggers is right or wrong, I respect and appreciate their knowledge.
