Good morning,
Snow is rapidly increasing and heading into Kansas City. Here is a look at ESP :Live
Snowfall rates will be light to moderate. Some areas could pick up 1 to 2 inches of snow in 6 hours between 8am and 2pm before a break in the snow occurs. Let us know what you are experiencing. We would really love to see any pictures of the snow you take. You can submit them to myreport@kshb.com .
We might see an afternoon break before the main part of the storm arrives tonight. It will be a weakened state when it gets here, so there is a chance that most of the snow we see out of the this storm will fall during the daylight hours today. In other words, if we get a total of three inches of snow from this storm, then 2 inches of snow could fall during the day and we might get another 1/2″ to inch tonight. Here is what our in house computer projects for the total accumulation from this storm.
Because the road surface temps were above freezing, and the roads were pre-treated, streets may become slushy with some slick spots developing but it may not be as icy and slick as it was on December 20th. However, after the sun sets tonight, some slick spots could develop as more light snow moves back into the region. Bottomline be careful!
Happy New Year!
Brett

god i hate small storms either big or nothing
just sucks and a waste of time
Brett, any signs of a warm up on the horizon?
It should get into 40s the middle of next week.
Snowing at a descent click in Olathe at 127th and Ridgeview. Probably been snowing for about 20 min. Already got a heavy dusting. Looks so beautiful falling. Its nice to have a daytime snow storm for once even if we aren’t going to get a bunch.
Garden City/Creighton Ground is covered and moderate snow. Visibility about 1/2 mile. No wind to speak of so it’s pretty much straight down.
What a great way to start the day. Kaluha in my coffee , fire in the fire pit, Pork sholder on the smoker and snow falling from the sky….Maybe I’ll put some Christmas music on the outdoor speakers….
if you woulda rubbed that shoulder with coffee,, thing of the possibilities,, i will be over after work
Moderate snowfall @ I-435 & Holmes Road.
Yeah, can’t remember the last time we could watch it snow like this. Nice.
About 1/2″ on our deck by JoCo Executive
Moderate snowfall in Eastern Jackson County. Right on schedule!
Enjoy the white fluffy stuff just don’t snort it!:)
Light to moderate snow in KC North just S of Gladstone, starting to stick to roads in the neighborhood.
Light to moderate snow in north Olathe, if it’s going to snow this is the kind to have, very picturesque and shouldn’t cause too many travel problems.
Beautiful, moderate snow falling in Blue Springs! Deck is covered, grassy areas beginning to disappear, but roads & sidewalks still mostly clear. Probably been falling for 45 min now.
There was a little burst of snow, clearly visible on radar, but it’s passed now. Snowing pretty lightly.
Snow got light after coming down pretty hard for about 45 minutes, but now it’s picking back up again. There are little waves of heavier precip moving along I-35 from around Wichita on radar.
Just spotted our first snowflakes here in Atchison County, Kansas
Looks like a good size hole in the precip.Just west of Witchita , heading this way ?
we were in a hole earlier perhaps it will fill in.
just measured two inches on the top of my car
Where are you Daniel?
Appleton City. Has been snowing good since at least 6 am.
Really? 2 inches I don’t think so. Can you send Brett a pic to verify this measurement?
1″ of snow on elevated deck – near downtown Lenexa.
Snow here in STJOE light started at 9:00 AM. The few brown patches and streets and walks are turning white. We are in lite ble on NWS radar from KC & TOP KC area is in some green should be moderate snow.

Sure is pretty to watch the snow during the daytime for once. Maybe we won’t get hammered this time, but at least everything is getting white!
Many areas have had more snow in the last 11 days than during all last winter… :O
I can really use some help from you bloggers. I am in Iowa and have about 60 driveways that will need to cleared if we get 3 inches on them. So, I would greatly appreciate any driveway measurements from the Lees Summit, Blue Springs, Independence areas! If it starts accumulating then I will need to drive back but if it turns out to be just an inch or two on the drives then I can stay up here longer. Thanks to anyone who can help.
snow not sticking to pavement to warm. I don’t think we’ll get 2 or even 3 inches on driveways the way it’s looking. I think it’s a pretty safe bet that you can stay in Iowa.
Ed, you are quite the hospitable individual.
Well said Miky
Measured 1″ in Greenwood MO. Started snowing just after 8:00 AM.
We got 2” in SW olathe
Light snow in SW Topeka since 9:00 or so. No accumulation.
Crennel has been FIRED !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I think every human being on earth saw that one coming.
There’s around 1″ of slush/snow on pavement that usually sits in the sun, place where the snow accumulated immediately have just under 2″.
About 1.25″ of snowfall on that deck now and a few other elevated surfaces. Snowfall rates have sure gone down. Gary – good job playing this one light and ignoring those models. I think the models were painting all the virga as extra snowfall and not accounting for the dry air in place here. Additionally, with the lack of cold air, .33″ of moisture at a 9:1 ratio given air temperature at start of event of 34 degrees is only 2.97″ of snow.
Anyone know why a huge hole has formed in the middle of the storm on radar? Is this the separation between the two parts of the storm they’ve been talking about, or has a huge amount of dry air been entrained?
4″ in my location
Where?
You,r lying
you need to get more sleep mcgabby. i can’t believe you were up all night on a blog. do you have a life?
1 3/4″ in NW Olathe
I don’t see how Salina is going to get the forecasted 4″ of snow…
Snow is sticking to my gravel road outside of Tonganoxie.
I think a good 2-5” for KC Metro. Especially the west side and south side of the metro.
Picking up it appears that a heavier band is to my WSW hopefully we wll get the entile 120-150 long but 45 wide band it is now dard blew and green from TOP radar, KC radar dark blue.
Is the snow tonight supposed to be more snow accumulation than today’s?
Bands of Steady to Moderate snow just keep rolling over my area in West County in St Louis
Up by KCI it is still a light snow, some is starting to stick to the grass but anything hitting the roads is melting and even snow falling on the cars is still melting.
North Olathe, near 119th and Ridgeview , just measured about 3/4″ on back step. No accumulation on patio facing south, no accumulation on street , very little accumulation on on north facing driveway. FACT.
Tush , we need the hammer dropped on Pioli as well or we’re doomed!
The Chiefs have sucked for many many years…long before Pioli. And even more than a decade ago when they would go 13-3 in the regular season they would choke and loose the first round of the playoffs. Blame Pioli if you want, but the Chiefs haves sucked for many many many many many many years.
3/4″ accumulation on my deck in KC North, but road has only enough snow on it to whiten it in spots. Some spots still with only wet pavement. Starting to think 1-1.5″ will be about it at my location.
Pioli seems to have talked his way out of being fired. How I don’t know. Clark Hunt is an idiot if he keeps Pioli. Pioli has run this organization into the ground. The Chiefs are a joke and so is cheap ass Hunt!!!!
Agreed, Pioli must go. Have you read the statement Clark Hunt put out? He says evaluation of the organization is continuing, so there is still hope Pioli will go.
Finally, a Hollywood movie style snow fall. So beautiful!
~1.4″ here in Lenexa now on the deck.
About 2.50” of snow now. Snow still pretty good
Lmao Fuk you muku. I’m young unlike you and I have this blog on my phone so I can check it wherever I am in the world. To answer your question, yes I do. I have a full time job supporting my beautiful fiancé and two kids. The real question is do YOU have a life? Other than being a troll on a blog?… You seem pretty comfortable in mommys basement little boy. Grow the hell up
Temper temper temper. You need to get some more sleep! You have the blog on your phone? Really? I guess you can’t leave the basement without it. Might want to get some glasses so you can read the ruler correctly. Have a good day. Remember God loves you and so do the bloggers
26 up here all sticking except to treated streets, coming down more than light but not moderate yet.
the south facing and west facing inclines that had melted are nearly all white now, hardly any left showing.
Winter Storm Warning in Westren Kansas for 5-8” of snow
Pioli needs to go. Period.
As for weather – this is a nice snow event. 1.5 here so far at my sister-in-laws in northern OP.
According to the radar the snow is splitting around me….there is snow to the north an south but none here! Tonganoxie split? Dang it! Is it supposed to fill in more? I would really like snow and as of now it looks like my snow is over with only a dusting on the ground. HELP!
Yeah this is a pretty lame event lol. I want a real snow! Not these 2-4″ duds.
It’s quite a bit warmer then forecasted, I have 36 at my house with some tiny snowflakes. The snow is melting pretty heavily right now.
most if it is melting on contact. Better forcast would have been 1′ or less. hindsight 20-20 of course, no way we get over and inch of accumlation at least in liberty, unless something happens tonight.
Looks like it’s going to be a 1-2 incher. Another one bites the dust!
Looks like round 1 is about petered out, and round 2 is lookin pretty weak at this point.
I don’t think there will even be a round 2. This thing is shearing up pretty fast.
Agreed. I said 1-3 and we’ll be lucky to get 1 or 1.5. Oh well Happy New Year to everyone. PLease don’t drink and drive! I AM OUT!
We barely got 1″ in north Olathe and it’s melting as fast as I type this. Just very light flurries now. Ballgame !
Nws in phill said the second round could be freezing drizzle… And yes, the temps are warmer than I thought they were supposed to be.. Snow still seems to be growing in western Kansas though
The snow is picking back up! with around 2.75” of snow. sending pics into the news very soon
Thanks, we will use them later.
The snow in Western Kansas isn’t dissipating at least, but it sounds like it will anyway. Oh well, there has to be another decent snow here eventually.
Skylar, even if the snow in western Kansas held together or intensified into a historical blizzard, it’s moving northeast and would be to Omaha, not Kansas City.
The snow hasn’t really been going any farther north then the first two tiers of counties in southern Nebraska. Anyway, P.Hill just posted an updated snowfall graphic on facebook about 30 minutes ago with 3-4″ (grassy surfaces) around and SE of I-35. The cold front should move through dropping temperatures into the 20s with about 1 more inch of additional accumulation expected overnight.
MOD SNOW visibility half mile treated streets are becoming slushy. been this hard for an hour, over an inch the few grassy areas out my window at work are gone.
that stuff out in KS intrests me as it moves ENE and is sheared that could catch the STJOE area i bet north central KS gets some good amnts, but they always do….
f00dl3 that snow isn’t all going to go in Iowa.. I guarantee there will be a second round.
Actually, a competitors website shows the radar with future loops showing where the whole area is expected to go and it shows it all going NE passing just West of Topeka. It shows pretty much all of that large area of snow in Western KS missing us to the west and northwest.
I have over an inch of snow and steady snow continues to fall in Wildwood
2.5″ near Johnson County Executive Airport
Temperature is dropping and we’re getting some pretty large flakes instead of the small drizzly ones we’ve been having the past two hours.
Still snowing here, but very lightly. 1.75 on the ground, but the driveway is now melting (it was covered) that’s weird, you’d think if it stuck the first time around, it’d stay if it didn’t warm up. Makes me think the temp rose a bit here.
U cant even tell its snowed here in Leavenworth. Nothing on the ground
3.5 here in Appleton City. Maybe more, snow has been kind of melting.
Snow is starting to pick up again. big flakes, more is increasing In central KS to Ottawa and Paola
Another little wave snow expanding out to the southwest. TOP is saying it should keep growing farther northward and the places that get under should get moderate snowfall throughout the afternoon enhancing the expected totals. Higher chance of this along and north of I-70, especially as you head farther west.
measured 3.75″ at Cole Camp, Mo. Lt snow falling. CCMM7
It appears that echos are increasing south of KC along I-35 and headed towards the metro area. Maybe a small uptick heading our way?
We picked up about 2 inches. It appears as we are getting ready to go into another hole in the snow. However, looking at Topeka Kansas radar. It appears as if the whole is shrinking as the blues and greens are growing in size. This could make a loan. The snow shorter than expected during the afternoon.
Looking at the visual satellite for Western Kansas, as well as the water vapor imagery satellite for that area. The Dodge City area that is forecasted to receive 5 to 8 inches of snow, tends to be moving more ENE vs. NE, perhaps that will give it the opportunity to impact the area with more significant snow and give us what I have been saying all along
. . . . 5-8 INCHER . . . .
Got 3” of snow in Olathe. with more coming.
Still only a dusting in Tonganoxie and the radar doesn’t look promising. Soooo disappointed!
measured 2.1 up here so far i bet on 3 more 1.5 in the day [not forecasted] and 3.5 after dark.
v lite sn now.
You guys who have 2, 3, 4 inches – consider yourselves the rare thing. Here near downtown Lenexa earlier there was 1.4″ of snow but almost half an inch has melted off – depth is down to 1″ even now across the deck, measured in 6 places. Temperature is 33.6 outside – falling, but it doesn’t look like the melting is going to stop. Snow is falling too light to overcome air temperatures right now. There is a bit of an uptick showing up but that shouldn’t last more than an hour.
I don’t think there will be a second round. If you look back at the SPC radar loop and water vapor satellite the circulation is cutting off from the best tropical moisture feed, which means it’s ripping apart. The circulation is moving northeast, and may impact St. Joseph but certainly not Kansas City proper.
Snow picked up again.. With just over 3”
TOP NWS indicated dry air was in place over Wabaunsee, Shawnee, Jackson and Northern Jefferson counties this morning which accounted for only a dusting in those areas. This includes Topeka and Tonganoxie. I have only had a dusting in SW Topeka.
…dry air likely extended into Leavenworth county… Tonganoxie.
Well poo…my kids were really looking forward to sledding.
OK, I’ll throw the bullshit flag. Barely, and I mean barely 1 inch at 167th & Antioch near BV West. Olathe people: You don’t measure snow by sticking your ruler in the grass until it hits the earth underneath. Oh, I forgot, you’re from Olathe and don’t know any better.
Thanks for coffee this morning Davey!
Just north of Lake Waukomis, snow has taped off but still falling, in very fine flakes/particles. There has been little or no accumulation on any surfaces except grass around here, and the temperature is above freezing. I’m a member of the snow-hater team, so this is just fine with me.
The grass isn’t even covered here. You Olathe boys must be compensating……..
My grass is covered
When you measure snowfall make sure you are not measuring in places you had snow from last week’s storm.
It appears that area of precip way out west is starting to make an eastward turn
Everyone that’s down grading the storm just wait, look at radar there’s more snow forming to the southwest of kc and the storms starting to turn east which will put us in the snow from kc to the Colorado… And it doesn’t look to be weakening.
It looks like the dry air is filling in across the area with more light-moderate snow, and the northern edge of the dry slot is struggling to make it to Emporia. It might be nearing its northern extent which would give KC some light accumulations for the next few hours. Even still, it’ll be hard to get much more as long as it stays above freezing.
Really nice sized flakes falling in my area in the Western Suburbs of St Louis
Parkville, 1 inch of snow, about half of that has melted. Nothing on streets or sidewalks.
radar looks to be filling in nicely for us
Still the same story in north Olathe , what’s falling is melting. 1″ tops, on grassy and elevated surfaces only. I think i might take a little drive to south Olathe so i can see this 3″
You can view preliminary snowfall totals here, just click the different numbers for each separate report. Generally 2-3″ south and east of the highways. Randolph County seems to have the highest with 4-5″.
Here in excelsior springs a little over an inch and the snow is easily accumulating sitting at 29 degrees
Snow still falling steadily here in OP 119th/Antioch. My home faces the south and everything hitting my driveway is still melting, but quite a bit of coverage here on the lawn. However, all the homes directly across the street from me facing north – different story. Quite a bit of accumulation there – neighbors have already shoveled a good amount of snow once and their driveways are already covered again. It’s the strangest thing to see…
Snow had stopped in downtown OP but has picked back up. Most roads still clear but maybe 2″ on the cars.
Measured an inch in St. Joe just now. Snow is really light but appears to be picking up in intensity a bit. Really hoping to squeeze out 2-3 inches
Snow is picking up for sure in Independence. But it wont last long and I am sure not much in accumulations as most have said. Sure is pretty look at as I work from home! Cheers!
blue8091, I absolutely hate my north facing driveway in the winter. It can stay icy for DAYS while the driveways across the street are bone dry from the sun.
Yeah snow is really starting to pick up now. Big flakes.
