Good Labor Day weekend bloggers,
The hottest stretch of the summer has decided to arrive at the end of August, which is a good thing. This means September is around the corner and cold fronts will return. We will talk about a September 1st cold front below.
There is a weak disturbance that will move through today. It is now bring a few showers and thunderstorms to southeast Nebraska and northeast Kansas. There is not much to this and will likely fall apart before it reaches our area. It will bring a period of clouds and this could hold our high down to 95°
Today we are still forecasting a high of 98°, in spite of the clouds, which will make this three consecutive days at 95° or higher. This means we will have had our first heat wave of the summer. This is better than last year as we were in our 6th heat wave at the end of August 2012.
Today will be our 24th day of 90° or higher this summer. Again. much better than last summer as we had 69 days 90° or higher.
We are in a HEAT ADVISORY today, but this should be one of the last ones we will have to deal with this summer! Northern Missouri is not included as a weak front will be north of I-70. This will cool areas to the north a few degrees.
Here is a look at the frontal set up today, again a few degrees cooler across northern Missouri.
Now, here is the good news! The cold front that is located across Nebraska and South Dakota today will move through Sunday. It will take all day to move through, so tomorrow will still be hot and humid, but headed in the right direction. The bad news is that there will not be much rain with this front. It has been 15 days since we have seen any decent rain and after tomorrow we may have to wait another 7 days.
Below is a forecast map for Sunday afternoon. The front is moving through with clouds and a few showers/thunderstorms. I would not cancel any outdoor plans based on the chance for rain. It is just not going to be that much.
The best day of the holiday weekend will be, no doubt, Labor day. We will have highs in the 80s, abundant sunshine, less humidity and a light north breeze, WOW!
Have a fun, great and safe Labor day weekend!
