New Years Eve Storm…2 PM Update

Good afternoon bloggers,

Our snow event continues and conditions are changing a bit.  First, a cold front is now moving south across the city and temperatures have fallen to the upper 20s north of the river and are still around 32 south.  This front will move south the next several hours and temps will be falling to the low 20s by midnight.  So, untreated surfaces will become slick after 3-5 PM.  Second, the snow is increasing, especially north, as the main system tracks through central Kansas to northern Missouri.

Here is a view from the Nicklaus Golf Club at 2 PM, the flakes are bigger:

Here is an image from Live ESP at 2 PM as well.  Notice, the snow increasing west and northwest of KC.  This area will continue to move east-northeast and weaken after 6 PM.  1/2″ to 1″ of new snow is likely between now and when the last of the snow falls by 2-3 PM.  Areas to the north and west may see 1-2″.

Enjoy the snow and Happy New Year!

Had about 1.4″ of snow before noon, some melted, got down to 1″, now back to 1.25″ of snow near downtown Lenexa.

  • HeatMiser

Another hour or two and the storm will be over as it lifts off to the Northeast

  • 6 solid inches in mission….. Wait… You are talking about snow.. Nevermind

  • ChiefsFan

So what’s this mean for downtown KC?

  • KUweatherman

I wouldn’t say this has been disappointing at all! Especially after our non-winter last year. IMO, this has actually been the perfect set up if we’re going to get snow. Pre-treated roads, steady snowfall rates, temp right around freezing. Means we get the awesome snow, but the roads stay passable/nearly clear.

  • Skylar

EAX now updating their grids to show 3-5″ with some places maybe getting up to 6″ SE of the metro.

  • outdoorchic76

So is this the second round of snow everyone talked about, or is there another round coming later tonight?

  • f00dl3

if all this would have stuck – if today’s high would have only been 32 (instead of 36) like the 7 day graphic said it would be last night – we would have had much more snow in the metro area! I’m sure over 3 inches of snow has fallen across the area if not more – but most of it has melted due to the warm air.

i just got a call from my cousin in garden city Kansas and they said that they got about 7-8 inches of snow on the ground with a winter storm warning in effect until 10om tonight WOW.

i am enjoying NYC right now with my aunt.

outdoorchic76 – the 2nd round of snow would have been from the trowal, but it appears any chance of that happening is going to stay west and north of a Topeka – St. Joseph line. We are right now just in an area of precip that is being caused by dry air lifting over moist air along and just ahead of the cold front on the east side of the circulation. The track of the low is going to stay north of Kansas City, and the low is going to become occluded which means all the snow will fall on the northwest side of the low, while the east and southeast side of the storm stays dry after this moisture fetch cuts off and we get “dry slotted”

Garden City/Creighton Well, I didn’t get around to measuring until 1:30 and there was a 1/2″ left. Less than that now.

  • f00dl3

Up to 2″ here near downtown Lenexa. Accumulation picking up and temperature has dropped to 32.9 now.

  • f00dl3

Interesting – a second surface low appears to be forming just west-southwest of Emporia and is sucking all the moisture in – it is tracking due east along the frontal boundary zone. If this happens – it may pull ALL this precipitation that extends back past Salina over us!

  • outdoorchic76

Foodl3….is that really a possibility or more of a wish? Can I start to hope?!!

  • snowfan65

To add to that it looks like more snow is forming out west and the batch west oF salina is moving east towards kc

  • f00dl3

Dunno – it looks like the spin up got absorbed as quick as it formed. Keeping an eye on it :)

BEEN SNOWING GOOD FOR 0VER 90 MINUTES AGAIN THIS MAY BE A SLEEPER EVENT.

WE ARE OVER 3 INCHES NO GRASS VISIBLE THAT HAD OLD SNOW MELTED 23 DEGREES BRISK NNE WIND.

INTERESTING THING OCCIRING IN KS/ WILL IT GET HERE???

  • goodlifegardens

Garden City/Creighton Started snowing again. Huge flakes. Visibility about 1/2 mile.

  • f00dl3

2.5″ now near downtown Lenexa measured 3 spots on deck. Picked up about 1/2 inch in last 40 mins or so. Temperature 32.5 now.

  • SouthOlatheGraham

About 4.25” of snow now. more to the west increasing looks like?

  • f00dl3

2nd circulation due south of Emporia right now, appears to be “stealing” moisture from primary circulation over central / southwest Kansas.

  • Emaw

Just measured about2″ on my daughters car in north Olathe

  • heavysnow

We had 2 inches of really wet snow in Wildwood, MO outside of St Louis

Right now Light Snow and Drizzle are falling and its 34

The updated forecast is for a general additional 1 inch of snow in my area with some areas getting as much as 2 inches

  • outdoorchic76

How sad, not even an inch in Tonganoxie and it has tapered off to flurries now. Guess that’s it for us. :-(

  • teamster83

this just defines and reinforces what i said earlier that Kansas city sucks

  • ChiefsFan

Jeff,or anyone when will the moderate to heavy snow, move out of metro kc

  • outdoorchic76

Dang Tonganoxie split! Apparently it works for snow too!

  • f00dl3

Light to moderate snow keeps redeveloping and should be with us another 5 to 7 hours – at the very least flurries to periods of moderate snowfall.

  • f00dl3

2.7″ near downtown Lenexa, temperature has fallen to 32.1 F

  • tigerscott

2.5 in Lees Summit.. all in grassy areas!

  • outdoorchic76

Still only a dusting in Tongie. I can still see the grass blades.

  • f00dl3

Looks like an area of moderate to heavy snow tracking due east roughly along I-70 just west of Manhatten KS right now. Let’s see if it holds together.

  • Emaw

Teamster83, if you don’t like it , move.

  • LSDan

Was hoping for more accumulation…looks like about 1.5 inches here in Lees Summit but just happy to have the moisture!

  • f00dl3

3.0″ near downtown Lenexa now. 30.8 F and falling.

  • Skylar

A little over 3″ by JoCo Executive, we’ve had light to moderate snow with some pretty big flakes for a while. Tree branches, fences, etc… are covered in snow again and there are some icicles forming too. If we could get like another inch to cover up the last few blades of grass this would be the perfect snowstorm IMO. :)

  • f00dl3

Skylar – should happen from the looks of it right now. Possibly even 2 or 3 more inches in spots if any of the bands get stronger.

  • mukustink

What if Emaw ia African American? or Chinese or Mexican?

  • weatherbro

    What is emaw is white?

  • f00dl3

Is that convective / thundersnow banding forming south of Topeka?

  • Emaw

I am white, and also a proud life long resident of our fine city. Why such anger? I was merely pointing out the fact that one can leave if they hate it here so much, no need to get so personal, geesh !
