Good morning bloggers,
If you live up to the north or east, then you may have awakened to some light rain. An area of rain greeted us this morning behind a weak cold front. The clouds associated with the area of rain will be slow to dissipate and temperatures should be 6 to 12 degrees cooler than yesterday.
Here is the 500 mb forecast showing the flow at around 18,000 feet above us. The heat wave creating machine, the anticyclone, is forecast to be southwest of us most of this week allowing these weak disturbances to rotate around it and over us.
The extreme heat will shift south and west and it will be trying to surge back our way at times. As long as the anticyclone stays southwest of us we will have some increased potential for these disturbances, like this mornings, to bring some rain to our local area. Today’s disturbance produced mostly a dying area of light rain. Let’s see how it sets up the rest of the week. Some spots will likely see a few heavier thunderstorms in this northwest flow pattern around the upper level ridge.
Have a great Monday morning. We will be debuting our new weather graphics system later in the week. Thanks for spending a few minutes reading the blog.
Gary

Up by Maple Woods CC this AM, we had a nice lightning show and some fairly loud thunder. It was a steady drizzle for about 2-hours early this morning. Not sure how much, as I had to leave for work while it was still coming down.
An amazing Lightning and Thunder show at 430. Bummed only .15″ fell. I’ll gladly take whatever falls though!
Hey Gary!
I think this hot weather is really starting to get to me and effect my mood. I really need a couple days where we have normal avg temps! Is there anything showing up where we might have a couple days in a row in the 80′s?
If I did the math correctly, yesterday was day 17 of 100+ temps this year, which would tie 1980. More 100 degree days and we’ll be headed toward totals not seen since the 1950s.
You know its hot and dry when scorpions are being found in KS!! Eeekkkk!
@mamaof3girls:
There is quite a large population of Scorpions down in SW Missouri. Especially where the natural glades are. If you’re in the KC Metro, (N. of Gardner) then what you saw was a very rare site. Check out Hercules Glades Wildlife area from the Missouri Department of Conservation for more information.
Also, there is an interesting population of Tranchulas.
Tarantulas?
Looks like everyone is getting burned yet again on high temps.
I saw Gary go for 109 for Sunday as of the Friday afternoon forecast…not sure what KCI got to, but I’m fairly certain it wasn’t 109.
And it appears KCI may not even budge above 90 today.
Well, Jerry, I’ll admit I’m on the other side of the metro from KCI (I’m in Belton), but Sunday we hit 108.8 at my house. I’d say he got pretty darn close.
LOL, so now we verify forecasts based on bloggers’ home thermometers? If any thermometer anywhere in the metro gets it, then Gary’s forecast was right!
Jerry, you should change your name to Newman. It would be fitting, trust me.
Tarantulas? Scorpions? Ew ew! I can’t even handle the common resident house spiders. Last month a spider was crawling in my car and I lost sight of him before I could pull over and kill him. Last week he made a reappearance ON MY FOOT while I was driving. I was very lucky there was no oncoming traffic since to say I freaked out was an understatement!
Actually I am in Linn County …just south of metro. Our pest control people have seen a lot of scorpions and tarantulas this summer. Eeekkkk!
Gary when do you expect the heat to return? You said in August you thought we could make a run at some record breaking heat. When could that be? Thanks
April..,May..,June..,July..,,,next month???
I,M BAAACK…Thank you very much..Your such a great audience. After a brief bout of bronchitis, and a “high”dose of steroids, and penicillin,I,m ready to play… Let the LRC GAMES BEGIN!!! Starting tomorrow, the first of many questions, will be launched…So stay tuned for some EXCITING challenges…
Bronchitis sucks man, sorry to hear that. Glad you’re back now as the conversation could use a boost. -Nick
Thanks. It started up a couple of weeks ago..The air quality, ozone, and dry air was probably the culprit. The steroids “SUCKED”,but has seemed to work, along w/ the Penicillin.
you have new graphics? Is it for both weather and news?
Please send in your tarantula photos and your scorpion photos. Exceptional drought is here. Mower, you must have seen them?
Gary – have you had a chance to compare this summer to the Dust Bowl heat waves?
