Monday’s Forecast Thoughts

Sit. Stay. Watch. Adopt, & Pledge!  The Kansas City Pet Telethon is on this Sunday from 6:30-9:30 PM on 38 the Spot (Channel 8 for Time Warner viewers)

Good morning bloggers,

The Spring Forecast will be on at 10 PM tonight!

A cold front moved through last night and it is a chilly Monday morning.  The cold front will stall over north Texas today briefly becoming a stationary front, and then it will surge north on Tuesday as a warm front.  Here is the surface forecast map valid at 6 PM Tuesday:

The returning warm front on Tuesday morning may be strong enough to help trigger showers and thunderstorms later tonight into Tuesday morning. The instability will be limited during the afternoon with high temperatures most likely staying in the 50s with a low overcast over most of Kansas.  The black dashed line indicates a trough of low pressure extending south out of the low pressure center into west Texas. This is really a dry line with a huge drop in dew points, low level Gulf of Mexico air, west of the trough line.  The Storm Prediction Center does not have any severe weather risk in our area for tomorrow. There may be a few brief strong to severe thunderstorms later in the day near the low pressure area and south along that dry line/trough later in the afternoon and early in the evening, but this risk appears it will stay way out to the west. The other risk area is much farther south where the moisture levels are much higher over eastern Oklahoma, southern Missouri, and Arkansas.

When this part of the pattern returns in mid-late April it will more likely produce severe thunderstorms in our area. The cloud cover and lack of heating is a huge factor for thunderstorm generation in this set-up Tuesday.  We will discuss more of the details on our weathercasts tonight.

The 12th annual Kansas City Pet Telethon is on 38 the Spot Sunday night: Kansas City Pet Telethon.  Stormy The Weather Dog & I will be hosting the show with many others helping out.  If you have a chance watch on Sunday night for a little while and make a pledge that benefits the Humane Society of Greater Kansas City.

Gary

Gary. We cannot wait to see your spring forecast prediction. It is going to be a crazy and wild spring ahead of us.

  • Hawksfan

Gary, I finally signed up for this blog and here’s why:
I am a longtime supporter of you and this station, but after the display of your “sportscasters” last night I can no longer support this station. I will now have to rely heavily on this blog.
I am sorry you are there, and until the sports changes, your station has lost a viewer. I am still a big fan of you and your weather, but I have to make my voice known in the only way I know how – taking my viewership elsewhere.

    • Hawksfan, I will have to go back and watch the segment from last night. I wonder what they did?

      • I think what he may be referring too is both jack harry and frank bowl had some dumping on KU last night and thought MU was clearly wronged by the refs…but of course, KU was not wronged in Columbia.. lol I think jack sometimes becomes a TV Troll trying to piss people off…but I expect that from Jack..nobody said they were the final authority on sports.

        • Well, bad calls or no bad calls Missouri blew a nineteen point lead. KU came back from 19 down. Missouri just needed to get that last shot off in time. There really are no excuses. Jack has his take. Think about what Jack had to go through. He was on the set doing sports while the last minute of that game was being played. I have been in that situation before doing the weather. It is quite difficult if you are a really big fan of the team playing that game.

      • calikufan

Gary they basically said that Missouri won the Columbia game fair and square but that KU won the game because of officiating.

It was obviously biased. It was sad to see Jack Harry a few weeks ago talk about how MU “really fought hard” to win the game in Columbia and to see yesterday that “KU was homered and was lucky to win”. I don’t know if he is playing the audiences for the ratings or what.

Gary I usually only turn on the TV around :16 minute to see you. Outside of Lance V, the sports on KSHB is blatantly biased.

      • Well I find Jack to be the most entertaining sports caster in KC even if u don’t always agree with him, he makes sports exciting.

  • rred95

no one knows what it is going to do this spring. I dont pay attention to these long range forcast any more. They are a joke (marketing gimmic) imo.

  • beckarelli

Going out for a weather photo Shoot is there any suggestions on where and when to go……………?

  • calikufan

On a weather topic, is this severe weather season going to be overly active? Or do I have to wait to read the blog tomorrow?

  • hk2111

As for the game . . . yes KU fouled and it wasn’t called but so did MU . . no excuses for Missouri though blowing a 19 point lead . . I only watch the weather on KSHB also . . Jack needs to retire . . the negativity he projects is sad . . maybe that’s why he’s not at the other station anymore .. not sure, but I didn’t watch him there either. Gary you do a fantastic job and I enjoy your weather and blog so much!!

  • frigate

I watch 41 for two reasons…first and formost…because of Gary…the other reason in my opinion…they don’t sensationalize the news like the other stations do. Jack is Jack…you get what you see, whether you like him or not.

Anxious for your spring forcast tonight!!!!

This just seems nuts to me and I almost didn’t post it, but this is on the preliminary EFD from the HPC dated this morning. Could this even be close to correct?

“THIS APPROACH SUGGESTS THAT A SIGNIFICANT WINTER STORM WITH POSSIBLY BLIZZARD CONDITIONS WILL AFFECT AREAS FROM ABOUT KANSAS CITY TO DES MOINES…MINNEAPOLIS AND LA CROSSE FRIDAY AND FRIDAY NIGHT…WITH PERHAPS A FOOT OR MORE OF SNOW.”

    • MikeL

This wording is also on the final EFD issued this afternoon. Are we about to get sucker punched?

  • Kole Christian

That does sound odd, I thought we weren’t going to get anything Friday.
I got to be honest, I do want to see some snow, and here’s my 2 cents about both mu ku games, MU got help from refs at home and KU got help from the refs at home

    • calikufan

At the VERY end of the KU game…yes questionable calls/no calls. But no way in hell do you get rid of a 19 pt lead with 11minutes left to go. Mizzou choked badly on Saturday. I’m not saying KU didn’t choke, though because we did.

  • Kole Christian

Both were very exciting games to watch though

  • mukustink

Well gary good luck with the spring forecast. Can’t be much worse then the winter forecast hey. I set the dvr seeing we are still in Daytona waiting for the race to start. I don’t know if the race down here will ever get going. Was clear of rain for a while now it looks like some storms to the west and one to the north. Hopefully they will slide to the south and miss Daytona. Glad I have plenty of vacation days!

Mu and KU what a bunch of cry babies! Boo hoo Jack Harry was opiniated and KU fan gets his panties in a bunch. My God from what was written on here you would think Jack went and spray painted the Field House with grafitti. Get a grip Hawksfan.

    • StormyWX

The reason why people get so upset and worked up about it (and K-State fans are the same way just so you know) is because Jack Harry actually GRADUATED from MU, so therefore it’s his Alma mater and so therefore he’s already naturally going to be more biased to it.

Another thing is that SINCE he came from MU, he didn’t seem to object to the fact that MU might have one THEIR GAME over in Columbia because of some slight officiating, yet when they were playing at KU, “that was the only reason why they lost,” and for some reason, just starting to suck, getting lazy and blowing a 19 point lead doesn’t count. It was almost as if MU fans felt ENTITLED to win (probably because of their *cough* THREE POINT WIN over in Columbia), so they’re blaming the refs more than KU did over at MU probably because it’s the last Border Showdown for possibly ever.

  • Farmgirl

So when is the rain going to move in?

  • calikufan

Did Gary just say near 80 next week? Holy cow….time for golf.

  • sportsfreaked

Let’s have a reality check on the spring forecast.

First your grade of your winter forecast you say you were correct on the winter temps. You were not correct. You said normal temps and we were way above normal for this winter so you were incorrect. I don’t believe you called for above average precip but we will let that one go. So 4 out of 6 were wrong. Not good.

You stated in your spring forecast that you could pick out dates of severe weather. Where are the dates? You say “we are expecting a stormy May with thunderstorms on many days, a few of which will be severe.” Wow really? Thunderstorms in May? Way to go out on a limb. The spring forecast is a joke. Are you sure weatherman brad didn’t make this spring forecast? What a joke. I expected better out of you Gary and your much touted LRC (majic eight ball).

    • Skylar

Now it’s time to correct your grade of their winter forcast. Basically, they said it would be a wetter winter with above average precipitation and warmer temperatures cutting into the potential snowfall totals; this was issued back in before the drought had even begun to break. Now, winter temperatures were quite a bit warmer than they’d thought (who would predict the least snowiest winter on record?), but the majority of winter forecasts this year were calling for a cold and snowy winter. They’ve done better, but it also wasnt nearly as bad as you portray it.

Anyone else having issues pulling up NOAA? I can pull up any website but theirs.
