Good evening bloggers,
A major winter storm is about to begin and the radar echoes are doing something unusual. Take a look at this radar image from 7:45 PM:
The radar echoes are moving in from the southeast and this area 0f snow is growing and becoming heavy. New data is rolling in and I may adjust this snowfall forecast slightly.
This is pretty exciting bloggers, but it will likely create many problems by morning.
Gary

Fairly heavy sleet at 159th and Antioch in south Overland Park
NAM and RAP in agreement that the storm will make it further north (and possibly west a bit) by 50+ miles including St. Joseph in the main swath of heavy snow. RAP showing up to 1.5″ liquid in St. Joe with nearly 2″ liquid in KC metro. I think a map update is necessary for this as well as the heavier radar echoes.
Yeah Gary looking like 12″+ is all but certain now. Look at that shield of snow!
Bring it on!!! The blog seems a bit better too. I wonder if Gary let this blog struggle so his other blog would get a few more hits? I enjoy them both!
Sleet in Spring Hill!
Any one care to post some links to the new models?
ALL HAIL THE SNOW GOD GARY!
Anyone who dares to question Gary the Weather God (aka Father Nature) commits the ultimate weather sin.
is it pose to snow much 2nite? we were thinking of going to p&l
Steady sleet at 161st & Mur-Len. I think it’s just the beginning.
Moderate sleet in Greenwood. Temperature has risen up to 36. Was 34 after the first band of snow.
Cool, lets see the new, slightly adjusted snow map Gary.
Yes please!
sleet and snow mix in se Lees Summit
Please let’s see the new data and maps please
Sleet in downtown OP, not snow. Still above freezing at 36. Temp has bounced back a few degrees since the band of snow went through.
Sleet/mix in Blue Springs/Independence.
nothing in Liberty. Please tell us what is unusual since the maps didn’t come up. Thanks.
This is Gary Blog I. I’ve spent more time on Gary Blog II today and thought I’d see if I could get on; was just about to write “Here it comes” and that’s your headline. This sleet won’t turn to ice before snow, will it? (ice phobic, survivor of multiple days-long power outages!)
Sleet/snow at 127th & Ridgeview-Olathe
Gary when should we expect an update with your new data?
i can not blog
Kindof quiet here.
I can’t believe this blog is still having tech issues. Anyway, what is the expected new snow totals? Seems as if the storm is much later than expected and the temps are way higher than initially forecasted. Gary any new snow fall updates?
Theyaren’t way higher by any means.
Everyone must be enjoying the calm before the storm or the beginning of the storm, it is very quiet. Haven’t heard from the Misers in a while.
The sleet is allowing the streets to freeze over now. Temperatures are also dropping.
One more attempt at responding to the blog. It’s a great night for snow lovers!
Word up Brother!
Just very light snow in Harrisonville right now. Hope they don’t drop our forecast totals. I was looking forward to being snowed in for a couple of days.
If we did get 2ft of snow approximately how high would the drifts be?
Depends on how strong the winds get. Could see some 4-5 feet probably.
I guess that would depend on the wind, wouldn’t it?
I think we might have lost the Miser boys because of frustration with posting and/or reading this blog.
John – 3 to 5 feet
Gary, what do you think the conditions will be like at 1030 here in Overland Park?
Snowing in Blue Springs. I like that. 37 degrees. I don’t like that. Any idea when temps will drop?? Long way to go to get below freezing right now.
the blog troubles are starting to reflect badly on kshb… there is zero excuse they should be going on this long. I can only imagine how frustrated Gary and co are with this. I would like to think they will fire this company after things calm down weather wise… to have this go one for so many days in a row.. completely in-excusable. just my two cents… I’m tired of hitting f5 numerous times..and weather2020 is having the same problems..
They’ve been saying that they’ve been working on it and have “fixed” it, so I’m wondering if any changes they HAVE made to fix the problem haven’t been enough because traffic has just been that heavy.
Either way, I would definitely recommend after the weather calms down that they just take a day and fix the blog and make it so it never…ever…crashes…again.
I’d bet anyone here lunch that support for the blog has been outsourced. “Hello, this is Bob, how may I help you.”
Sleet/freezing rain in KC/Lee’s Summit border for awhile…now all snow again…driveway was slick very quickly
All snow at 127th& Ridgeview-Olathe
Sleet has changed to all snow and the intensity is rapidly increasing and temperature has dropped back to 34 degrees in Greenwood.
All snow by Johnson County Executive now, sticking to everything.
Snow sleet mix. Moderate. In Platte City
All SNOW in Lees Summit!!!
It’s raining 3′s in Aimes
.
Gary,
You should seriously consider changing the title of this blog post to “Here Comes Snowy Boo Boo”.
Just sayin’…
This thing is moving more to the North, isn’t it Gary?
@lvksguy – LOL! Where have you been? YES!
Under a rock apparently lol!
temps are staying up. When are they predicted to go down?
The temps are troublesome. RAIN in Western Shawnee.
KU announced it’s closed tomorrow
Anyone notice we are in a mesoscale discussion on SPC? <a href"http://www.spc.noaa.gov/products/md/md0228.html" title="http://www.spc.noaa.gov/products/md/md0228.html"
Tried to be all fancy and failed… http://www.spc.noaa.gov/products/md/md0228.html
Rain day! Rain day!
What are the odds this stays all rain?
Just heard thunder in Mission!!
Just had thunder in 0P
Thunderstorms, not thundersnow? It’s all precipitation, so good.
Mesocscale Discussion from the SPC concerning heavy snow along I-35 through KC.
http://www.spc.noaa.gov/products/md/md0228.html
Lightning and thunder in Shawnee. Nice rain storm.
Temps are still above freezing!
zero percent
Thunder and light snow / grains near I-29 & 64th.
Just heard a rumble of thunder in Prairie Village!
Snowing in Mission
All rain now. Temp is 35 in PC. Temp needs to come down already.
nothing east of liberty at 152 between 435 and 35
Still don’t think we are going to get as much as they think, temps are too warm.
Calm station seems to still think the bulls eye is staying south.
who is “calm station”
“Keeping calm during the storm”
Temps need to lower to make this a big snow storm. Considering our drought, any precip. is good to have.
Is it just me or is the 7:45pm radar image that Gary posted not showing on the blog?
It’s on the 2020 blog
Cool, thanks. I did see the radar image on there but wasn’t sure that it was the same one
We’ve had all snow in Greenwood for about an hour now!
It’s coming down pretty hard. Streets are covered.
nothing weat of liberty at 152 between 435 and 35
Hey Gary, where are those slightly adjusted snowfall totals? Bring ‘em on!
Snowing moderately in Raytown!
I can’t see the radar image Gary put in the blog either.
Weird, I can see it. Are you looking at his most recent blog
blog over there called “Heavy Snow is Approaching”? If not, go to top of page and click on “blog” for most recent blog.
It’s still near 40 degrees here at my house in KCK…wow.
weather 2020 blog is not working
It sort of is…keep hitting F5
All snow in Lawrence now!
Gary these temps are VERY worrisome.
Spitty sleet at I-35 and 75th.
I have all snow in prairie village. Coming down pretty heavy. I keep hearing about the temps and how its raining…. I dont see it? Is there a chance it continues to rain Gary? and the rain cut into the snow totals?
27 hour GFS is 9-10 for west of liberty area.
no updates?? come on! No one got this storm right, temps too high for major snow accumulation.
Yu need to calm down dude…they will go down…this storm will last a long time.
Kind of reminds me of that late December snow where it snowed all day but nothing really accumulated. The inch that fell around 3PM has already melted. I don’t see ANY sub-32 degree air in the snow shield. We won’t see any accumulation tonight if it does not cool down.
New GFS has lower snow totals.
GFS and NAM are not accurate in the midst of a system. RAP and RUC are helpful. However, if the temps do not go down, snow is not going to accumulate near as much as forecast.
These temperatures are nuts! Got down to 34 then back to 36 then back to 34 within several hours. As soon as it hits about 32 and 31 all heck is going to break loose on the pavement. Just 2 more degrees! What a difference a few degrees makes. We must remember that the accumulations weren’t supposed to begin until later anyway so it is an indication of a strengthening storm and that equals high amounts of snowfall.
Wow, they really blew the temps. For now at least.
All snow in Raymore and coming down at a good clip. Streets & driveway already turning white
I wish someone would just give a dang update like promised
I’m sure he’s working feverishly. Between the storm taking what appears to be a different track than expected and these warmer than expected temps it has to be a wild ride for him.
Heavy snow with giant flakes by JoCo executive! Pavement is slushy to snow covered snow with a dusting to 1/2″ depending on what direction it faces during the daylight. Everything will be coated white by tomorrow morning.
Snowing and 32.7 degrees near 151st and U.S. 69 in Overland Park at 9:45.
This thing is looking like it may POOF. :/
Still thinking this is not the storm it’s made out to be
Wow, are you in for a shock!
Just remember that several inches of snow equals only 1″ of precipitation (can’t remember the formula). We’re in extreme drought so even if the temperatures blow the winter storm away, we’re STILL getting beneficial moisture.
With temps near 32, 1 inch of precip should be around 8 inches of snow.
its not going poof network guy…… I swear everyone feeds off of one post that says temps are too high nothing is sticking…. give it sometime see what Gary says on the update before you start saying the P word….
Snow starting to stick in Lawrence
All snow in Greenwood. Temperature 33 degrees. It’s dropped 3 degrees since it started snowing. The snow is cooling the air rather quickly.
this storm is a ‘bust’
I just don’t see it right now guys. Temps are winning out and the snow started earlier than they thought it would.
i bet totals are cut in half: 3-8 inches across metro
flyen high explain why this storm is a bust?
He doesn’t know what he’s talking about, that’s the explanation. LoL
People.. I lived in several 10″+ snows in NC and almost everyone of them.started with temps 38 or higher.. the snow will cool the column.. so chill..
LOL guys, the temps, starting out as rain, everything that is happening right now was predicted and accounted for. The storm isnt even here yet. Calm down, go to bed and wake up to a nice white out!
erock89- storm has been delayed by several hours, temps 6 degrees higher than forecasted and holding steady, rain and sleet mixing with light snow. that’s why thus far it’s a bust or missed forecast.
It was forecast to be a mix at first, it slowed down a bit, it’s coming, it will be mostly snow…chill the f*** out dude.
Amsterdam, MO: Looking like we have about 1.5″ of snow so far, coming down light to moderate. I do have an accurate an accurate thermometer but earlier tonight it was 40 and now it is at 43. Since I’m on south side of the snow belt at KC, maybe I’m picking up on the warmer moist air feeding storm?
35.8 F in Leavenworth. Anxious and excited. While we’re all waiting I hope to hear some more “Dribble from Gribble”…
It’s just not quite cold enough to freeze squirrel but my foil hat fits nicely.
Gary said the main event doesn’t start until after 11pm, so you could say the snow right now is “extra”. There are also some reports of thundersnow starting to come in, so it should start picking up pretty quickly. Temperatures will drop below freezing, this isn’t a bust. Just sit back and enjoy!
Temps have been holding steady around 35 for A WHILE now. I hope your right.
Gary updated the KSHB forecast page 9 minutes ago. Has range of 6″-17″ now. That’s a big range!
Jeremiah – Thanks for a good laugh with your tin foil hat comment! =)
NW Lawrence has temp of 36, with light rain falling. Radar shows snow, but it is rain.
Thats interesting, because in central Lawrence I am watching all snow come down and it’s sticking to the road now.
The high is supposed to be 35 tomorrow now lol. This is slowly turning into a more typical KC weather event.
Gary just put on facebook that he lowered the totals a bit due to the temps
Lower totals, but still a good amount of snow, need those temps to drop!
LoL…I’ve never seen such a group of nervous nellies freaking out at anything. It’s a riot. Okay, you are right…no snow for us. Go to work and school tomorrow and enjoy…LoL!!!!
I think the high on Tuesday was always going to be in the 30s. At any rate Gary is working on his new map and we’ll see…
33 in Olathe..come on one more degree you can do it!
Yep, Gary lowered the totals. It is just too warm for a big snow.
Wrong wrong wrong. Still big snow, only lowered amounts slightly, said he could up them again later anyway. Man, some of you are such drama queens. LoL
He’s going to keep lowering them. I expect to wake up tomorrow with maybe around 3″. Very disappointing.
I’ve said for days, the temps are too high! This will not be a major event.
Seems to me so far that practically ALL of these school closings were premature.
It won’t be the first time schools closed because of “slush”.
3″?? I guess you live in St. Joe or somewhere on the outskirts, b/c he is still calling for 7-14″ for the metro with the bulls-eye 12-20″. Still a lot of snow, sit back and enjoy the event.
Reminds me of storms when I was a kid. Temps would hover right around 33 and just not go down due to the warm air from the gulf.
The column is definitely cooling…went from 35.2 to 34.3 in the past 20 minutes. (Zona Rosa area)
I live in south KC where the temp has been stuck at 35 for the last SEVERAL HOURS. They arent going to drop much further.
@weatherkcmo – please stfu dude
Gary – please give us an update…if things are changing for this storm to fall apart we need to know.
You are right they won’t drop much further, but 32 degrees is only 3 more degrees, so enjoy your 7 to 14″.
we are now expected to hit 32 degrees at 2am
In Louisburg temp is 32.6 with moderate to heavy snow. 2″ have accumulated so far and streets are covered.
Was this the same storm last time through the LRC it snowed all day but only 3″ stuck because it was 33-35 outside? I remember from 9 AM untill 2 or 3 PM all the snow melted as it fell.
weatherkcmo give it up man let mother nature do her thing…. Its been snowing for an hour straight here in Prairie Village so I guess im just the lucky one whos getting snow out of this. I saw you said on 2020 blog rains coming…. can you show me the map you saw that showed this cause I cant find
Amazing…only a few miles west of you it’s lightly sleeting.
A few miles earlier on the gradient map in LV County was the difference between a dusting and 18″. It’s an interesting wait and see event.
Back up above freezing tomorrow. The snow will just melt.
weatherkcmo give it up man let mother nature do her thing…. Its been snowing for an hour straight here in Prairie Village so I guess im just the lucky one whos getting snow out of this. I saw you said on 2020 blog rains coming…. can you show me the map you saw that showed this cause I cant find
LoL…a bunch of them panic and just on the freak out wagon over anything. It’s a freaking riot!
I meant jump on freak out wagon…lol
Snowing moderately in Lawrence…roads almost totally white now.
Leavenworth 35.4 degrees. Steady from 36 over the last 2 hours.
Prarie Village? I live like five minutes from you.
Streets getting covered a bit in LSMO.
I really wish the weather team would update this if they are changing their forcast that drastically.
Just heard Thunder in Louisburg.
You could tell by the way Gary was acting that this is not going to be a big deal and the amounts will probably be further lowered
No, you couldn’t tell that at all…you are making that up. LoL
32.3 degrees at 151st and U.S. 69 in Overland Park. My thermometer is 4 feet off the ground under my deck. It’s usually pretty accurate.
Still snowing, and sticking.
Thermometer showing 32 in Mission, KS
Can someone link the most recent video where he gave an update?
I really hate to say this…but if you are responsible for keeping the mobile network going for our local telco…
It was on the 10:00 news. Lowered his snow totals slightly. 12-20″ for Harrisonville bullseye. 7 – 12″ for the Lee’s Summit band. the chart is the same as its been…just the totals changed.
You’re right I am. Oh and while your being a dumb a**, the video wasn’t updated on their webpage. It’s time coded 1030PM but is actually from 9 something. So keep your stupid a** comments to yourself. I’m 10x smarter than you, obviously.
That’s way down from earlier.
Rock Chalk Jayhawk!!
Johnson was unbelievable!!!!!!!!
Did they win in O/T?
Yes, with about 1 min left E. Johnson drove to the left, missed a shot, rebounded, threw it back out, got the ball with a couple sec on the shot clock, threw up a NBA 3-pointer and nailed it. He finished with 37 points and KU scored over 100 for the whole game.
Rock Chalk Jayhawk!!
108-96
Snowing like crazy near Zona Rosa, streets are covered.
Roads now white at HWY 45 and I-435, snowing very hard.
What a bunch of psychotics. It’s just weather. No big deal. Give Gary a break.
Rkcal,
I’m upset, where’s the rain we were suppose to get?
Snowing heavily in Lawrence, streets are covered now.
Hearing rumbles of thunder in Spring Hill.
It’s now 34 around the PV area.
Snow now sticking to the roads in Blue Springs/Independence
temps went up from 33 to 34.
Looks like the back edge should be to the metro by 1am based on radar.
Wrong as always
You are either just trolling, being funny, or have no idea what you are talking about. The back edge? It’s a conveyor of moisture over the same area for many, many hours.
Heavy snow in Platte City. 34 degrees and stinking to cars and grassy areas, roofs of buildings. Roads still just wet right now. Big flakes. Temp should start dropping soon
With 4 inches per hour we’ll get the predict 8 inches in my area then foold3, you guys trust the radar too much, it can be as misleading as the models, hasn’t Gary been saying this storm should continue until tomorrow midday?
32.1 and snowing hard in south kck
I hate when snow stinks to cars…….lmao
When was the last time someone remembers a storm coming into the KC metro from the East. BTW, the winds have picked up. It will be interesting how many power outages we have from this storm that is supposed to last for another 12 hours and carry into Wednesday.
In the last 10 minutes everything is covered. This will be a winter wonderland in the morning.
It has been sticking to the streets and sidewalks since 11 here (152 & N.Oak) and we got an inch earlier in the first band. I don’t know what the temp is, but I’m gonna go to bed and trust I will wake to a driveway that needs to be shoveled.
Just measured 1.75″ in Greenwood with a temperature of 33 degrees. Snow intensity has been increasing and roads are snow covered.
