Four Hundreths!

Good morning bloggers,

Pool Forecast:

  • A great day with sunshine and a few cumulus clouds.  High: 90°

Shockingly there are many spots around our viewing area that have had almost no measurable rain this month. New Century airport in Gardner, KS (just south of Olathe) has recorded only .04″ of rain this month. We have had an active July weather pattern and it is just very difficult to always be in the wrong spot in every rain chance situation, but this is what has been happening. We have had cold fronts move through, upper level storms track from Ohio southwest to Oklahoma, favorable flow aloft, and more. It has been an active month above us and yet we sit here with a dry result.  The corn fields need an inch of rain NOW or we will lose our local corn. There is a good chance of rain Friday night and I will go over the details below.

An anticyclone has developed over the eastern third of the nation and the National Media is going nuts over this first heat wave of the summer. It isn’t that ridiculous. They are going into a three to four day heat wave with an obvious big break to it in sight.  For Kansas City we will be heating up as we move into Friday as well, but a cold front will move through us on Saturday. The map above shows the flow aloft today, and the map below shows the big change by Friday night and Saturday morning:

This change to northwest flow through the Great Lakes will drive a weakening cold front into our area. And, when the front moves through we will have one good chance of thunderstorms. Are we going to once again be in the wrong spot with bad timing or could we get an inch of rain Friday night?  The set up will exist for a band of very heavy thunderstorms Friday night into Saturday morning. We will just have to see exactly how it sets up during the day on Friday.

The surface map is valid at 7 AM Saturday. A weakening cold front will be sliding through with a few showers and thunderstorms. Will Olathe/Gardner get another 0.04″ of will we set up better this time for some heavy downpours in our area. We will go over the details on 41 Action News today and tonight. Have a great Tuesday!

12Z GFS is underwhelming in its rainfall forecast for the 12/13 July event locally. Forecasts under 1/2 inch for KC area. Too far out for NAM. Could still change for the better (or worse). Link is for GFS 48 hour total precip, valid at 4 p.m. local time Sat. afternoon. “http://mag.ncep.noaa.gov/Image.php?model=gfs&area=namer&param=precip_p48&cycle=12&image=gfs%2F12%2Fgfs_namer_105_precip_p48.gif”

I am not getting my hopes up period about Friday or Saturday rain event. Basically much to do about nothing unless one lives outside the 100 mile bubble that sits over KC.

Thx for the link tush. While the sky was pitch black 20 miles to the ne, it was clear and sunny here. We missed another round of storms overnight to our sw! We move to williston nd tom. Maybe that’s the bullseye for rain up this way. I return to kc on Thursday. Here’s hopin to bringin some moisture with me!

Well I hope it doesn’t rain on Saturday from 6am till 9 or 10pm as we have friends coming up from St. Louis with their 2 kids to go boating on the lake and fishing all day Saturday. It can rain Friday night all it wants.

Mr. President I thought I was off the rest of the week?
Signed by Intern for Kevins Forecasting Center :) Have a good one!

Gary what ever happened to the killdeer eggs? I have seen no updates at all on them. Did nature get the best of them? Please answer! I can’t sleep at night worrying about them :(.

Losing the corn crop eh? Well, it won’t make any difference as far as supply goes and as far as our local farmer’s paycheck… the taxpayers will continue to make up any monetary shortfall on their corn crop. Don’t worry about them… they’ll continue to recieve tax dollars and grow asset wealthy.
