Good evening bloggers,
I am currently on the air and analyzing the latest data. Here is the updated snowfall forecast map and I will write up a new blog around 8 PM. I will be going over all of the details on 41 Action News at 5 and 6 PM.
The storm is currently going through a transition as it slides east out of Colorado and over western Kansas. This storm will begin intensifying later tonight:
Gary

Trending south!
cool, lansing will get 4in at least now
after this snowstorm, the GFS still BLASTS us with snow on the 25-26th
Haven’t looked at it since this morning. What is it saying? Just curious.
12″+
I thought the data this morning had next week’s storm going *poof*?
Going to fire up the snow blower this evening in order to prep. Has been sitting there since 2011!
Gary,
Just curious, why the lack of a 4-6″ band? Map goes from 2-4″ to 6″+. Seems as though there should be a band in between. Thanks..
Matt
Good point! This is why I love you bloggers! I will adjust it and update this later on. I will fix it on my 41 Action News version, which I haven’t shown yet.
Thanks Gary.. I know it’s a busy night. I was just curious.
i was thinking the same, seems like leavenworth shouldnt have the same totals with a shift further south
NO 5
Looks like Zack and Lindsey got the overpass and modot kdot salt dome assignments lol.
Just heard a big rumble of thunder in Blue Springs. Come on temps & snow. Would love a snow day tomorrow to finish my baking and wrap presents!!
Gary looks like you went with 2-4 for the metro. I changed my “guess” about an hour ago after seeing that this thingis slowing and digging further then previous models had suggested. I hope I don’t look stupid in the morning
Hmmm … is it fair to change at the last minute?
Just kiddin’ with ya. Hope you are right!
I will get my 6-8 just like i stated monday 25 and 26 coming back too.
22Z RAP model shows a band of snow with rates greater than 1″/hour coming across esp. north side of Kansas City between 6 and 8 a.m. tomorrow. The rush hour is going to be horrific if this verifies, unless people stay home.
The vastness in snowfall forecasts among the meteorologists is incredible. We have Gary and company predicting 2-4″ for the metro area while another one is forecasting for just about the ENTIRE viewing area to get a trace to two inches at the absolute most. Everyone else is forecasting something closer to Gary.
It will be very interesting indeed to see who turns out to be “right.”
Crennel and Pioli are fired according to sources close to Nick Wright.
Merry Christmas chiefs fans!
I posted a few days back not sure exactly when (Mikey would know) that I had a source that Pioli would be fired at the end of the season. Old news LOL
I think we should let go of Pioli and give Romeo his defensive cordinator duties back.
The dry-slot cometh.
y you so negative bro?
Gotta say I’m pretty disappointed in the front side of this storm. Oh well, maybe a front-side bust will turn into something better on the back side.
Not negative at all bro.
EMAW just enjoys saying JACK SQUAT! And is right the majority of the time
O, thats right, well i hope you are wrong this time.
The way the winds are gonna be, there will be parts of my yard with a trace of snow, and other parts with 4″. So they’ll both be right!
For what it is worth accuweather app on my phone gives st soe 7.1 inches weather channel 1-3. stjoe has been cut in half by Gary’s 6 inch line since monday and NWS has 3-5 over nite and 1-2 on thursday [4-7]. So NWS and Gary have Stjoe at 6 or so we will see.
G-man: Any chance that the storm could bomb out just east of us and bring across a comma head that leaves 4-6″ instead? Just wondering…
Keep up the good work!
Yes, I do think there is some potential of this happening. I would like to see some evidence before I am on at 10 PM. But, I will forecast it if I believe it will happen.
Light snow falling at KCI. Time to DeIce airplanes. Already canceling flights for the AM
I want to ask again: When can we expect the winds to die down so that the kids can get outside and play without turning into human Popsicles?
The kids will be fine. They have coats? Gloves? Hats? If they have all of the above the little babies will be just fine. They could use a little toughening up.
agreed. kids these days are freaking pansies.
Don’t pay attention to mukustink …
Several of us answered your question above. Tomorrow will be very windy all day. Gusts will not subside until late in the day or after dark. Unfortunately, this probably is not the kind of snow kids have that much fun playing in.
Maybe Gary needs to come up with a “snow-fun” index. I would rate tomorrow at about a 3 on a scale of 10.
WHAT? Come on Rick when I was a kid I had to walk to school uphill both ways with holes in my shoes in snow that was 2 feet deep. I had a jacket and no gloves and no hat. We survived
I call BS on light snow falling at KCI!
Agreed!
I really hope it snows!
up in NE Missouri now. Near Macon. Light rain is falling now.
Emaw is always on here saying the same thing lol.. I think he/she even said jack squat for the 09 blizzard. Are you the met from the “other station” emaw??
I agree. Not snowing at kci!!!
“http://westernusawx.info/forums/index.php?app=core&module=attach§ion=attach&attach_rel_module=post&attach_id=23408″ check this out u can see where the low is at
cool,
this is the live feed I think
“http://hint.fm/wind/”
Very high winds will be widespread with this storm. Outside the blizzard area, wind gusts 55 to 60 mph forecast overnight for Oklahoma City, and wind gusts to 55 mph forecast for central Illinois tomorrow and tomorrow night. It’s very likely we too will see gusts to at least 50 mph tomorrow.
The WV satellite imagery is already starting to show the comma head configuration to the clouds as far south as northeast New Mexico.

I give Gary a lot credit, he has definitely stuck his neck out regarding the timing of the storm and its arrival here in Kansas City. Hardly ever see a metrologist try to pin down the evolution of a storm in 1 to 6 hour time intervals. So far, he has been correct, he never mentioned we would get a lot of rain from the front side of the storm, rather just scattered showers with a possible thunderstorm. I sure hope the remainder of his timeline verifies!
As for current weather in my neck of the woods, currently 40 degrees, definitely didn’t hit the predicted high today, and the winds are starting to pick up a bit.
I am glad that winter has finally decided to show up, even if it is only for one day…
No, and you can refer to me as he, I call it like I see it and always report accurate totals from my location not inflated ones like many on here, and it’s still not snowing at KCI.
I hope they keep Crennel as d coordinator, and I miss Nick Wright on 610. I’m sticking with my 2-3 for Parkville, I hope we get more though, I got a snowblower I want to use as well.
No, it’s not. But it will! Kustink, Emaw, I believe you guys might be wrong on this one
Lightning here few at 45 hwy and I-435
Winds have shifted from E to N at Wichita with attendant pressure rise indicating the low pressure at the surface passed S of there and is now to their east. A gradual wind shift from E to NE to N has also occurred over the past 2 hours at Topeka, but the wind speed has decreased for now.
you guys see that yellow arc of rain on the radar now?
Kole, time will tell, snowlovers are going to have a long anxious night staring at radar. I’ve seen storms like this before go “poof”
Sudden thunder and now a steady rainfall a few minutes ago (6:27pm) out here in Wyandotte County.
That’s ok, call BS if ya want. Light coating on airplanes say it was. Not now. I guess I should have said light flurries.
It’s like spring here!
i dont see it happening,, im with emaw, and the other station,, Gary is all hype,,
Emaw,
I’ve seen them over achieve too. But I’m not waiting up to watch it snow, but I might get up early…
Now raining at KCI
It’s 38 in St Joe with a steady cold light rain. I’m sure the kiddos will get an early start to winter break tomorrow. I’m guessing the roads will be iced and sleeted underneath the snow. That combined with the winds is sure to make my normal 5 minute commute a 30 minute commute. I just hope everyone takes their time on the roads! Drive smart people!!!!
WE JUST GOT A TON OF HAIL HERE!!! Gary!!! Hwy 45 and I-435! Pea to homony sized hail! This is much needed rain!
BTW, I actually work outside at KCI. Not reporting from my parents basrment
melafinatu, I’m sure it is snowing at about 15’000 feet.
Actually, it probably is not. The thermal profile is pretty warm right now.
Pea size hail at KCI
I see red echos in the radar return. Bring it on!
I have to say, hail in December is almost as exciting as getting snow.
Gary or anyone, is this gonna be a quick moving snow as it passes by? A lot of snow in short duration storm?
This will be a quick hitter. In Kansas City, mixed precip or sleet changing to snow begins around 3 or 4 am, all snow by 5 am, is most intense around 6 or 7 am, tapers off by 9 am and ends by 11 am or so. But at its peak it could look like a blizzard outside if it does what the snow optimists think it will do.
It has been snowing since about 2:30 up here in Omaha and we have about 2″ on the ground so far. I’m headed back to KC tomorrow after lunch and I’m hoping the blowing snow won’t be an issue for me on I-29 south.
I really hope KC gets nailed by this one…we need the moisture. Stay safe everyone…
And the thunder rolls in stjomo! We are getting the best of the Midwest with this storm! Wooohoo!
#1 rule in weather…look outside
I don’t know about all of you all but I prefer my handy weather rock to do my forecasting! It has never failed me!
look whats coming.
Just had a couple thunderstorms pass through St Joe.
I hope it’s not Ice.
very interesting…cross sectional air soundings graph on line from Albuquerque to Nashville.
I hope i am not missing something. Why would they really issue a winter weather advisory for 2 inches of snow and why would it impair traffic tomo morning i live in clay county north.
It’s the 30 to 50 mph winds tomorrow that will make the 2 to 3 or 4 inches of snow a bigger problem than normal. It’s also the biggest winter storm to hit Kansas City in almost two years, and many drivers get amnesia about how to drive in winter until they get out on slick roads and end up in the ditch or against a guardrail or retaining wall during the first winter storm of the season.
Thanks Sedsinkc, I thought they way they were talking it being a quick hitter, there better than the long 12 hour snows
forgot to include the graph!

Looks like some dry air moving in. Could it be General Dry Slot making his first appearance? Maybe I should have stuck to my initial thoughts of under an inch. Should I go back to under an inch or stay with 2-4? I don’t know what to do. What should I do? I said 2-4 for the immediate metro before Gary did. Was it the right call? Where is Mr. President? I need your leadership NOW. What should I do? What amount should I go with? Oh hell I will stick to 2-4. I hope I don’t regret it in the morning.
There is a very nice comma head of snow developing as far south as the KS/OK border about as far west as Dodge City. This storm is moving generally east right now and will gradually turn to the northeast later tonight, but this comma head is far enough south that it should make it to Kansas City as expected.
SPC may issue a tornado watch for eastern OK and western Arkansas up to maybe SE Kansas and southern MO.
Holy crap..,just saw a huge flash of lightning with this downburst of snow in Omaha!!! Totally wicked!!!
Very neat! Some places in the KC area could get some thundersleet/snow late tonight or early tomorrow morning.
Northland, we lived in Omaha for 10 years, I remember the thunder snows and the 80 inch snow winters as well. Have always been amazed at the weather difference 200 miles can make.
NorthlandKB: How much snow do you have in Omaha, and how long has it been snowing today
New Blog
Just heard thunder
Gary: What does snowfall totals look like for the Columbia, MO area where I am located. Since storm is slowing down & trending southward should I be concerned in Boone Co with the possibility of Winter Weather Advisory’s maybe being issued for my area in time & snowfall amounts being edged up any? Thanks
I was extremely excited about the snowfall in Denver. I am originally from the mountains and miss the snow here in the winter. I think if the world ended, I would probably miss snow the most. Let’s hope that the snow stays in Colorado.
