Maybe a few raindrops today, possibly an afternoon strong thunderstorm?

Good morning bloggers,

We have some ingredients coming together for a few thunderstorms later this afternoon and evening. There is a slight risk of severe weather and if the sun comes out, and it looks like it will, we should have a few strong to severe thunderstorms developing with microbursts being the main severe weather type.  We will be tracking any development on 41 Action News beginning at 4:30 PM today.  Here is today’s blog entry:

Temperatures jumped to above 100° in most locations on Tuesday.  Here are the highs from yesterday:

Now, will it rain today? Rain showers are struggling to produce more than a few drops of rain at the ground this morning.  Light rain was reported at KCI Airport at 7 AM as these “drought” showers move  across the region. Today is day 71 of the drought and there is no end in sight. A few spots will have these morning light rain showers, and then a few thunderstorms may form this afternoon, but these should be isolated and most spots will likely have rainfall amounts between zero and 1/10th of an inch.   If the sun comes out rather strongly for a little while today we could easily jump back up to near or above 100 degrees.  A cold front will move through later tonight and Thursday shifting our winds to the north and bringing us a two to three day break from the strong heating.

What to look for today:

  • The morning sprinkles (downpours up north near St. Joseph and a few other spots) will weaken
  • The sun will likely come out heating us up and destabilizing the lower layers
  • A cold pool of air aloft will be moving overhead this afternoon
  • A few thunderstorms will likely form if the atmosphere destabilizes enough, there is a slight risk of severe thunderstorms
  • A cold front will move through Thursday

Here is a picture of the drought showers on the horizon:

Stormy The Weather Dog and Breezy got shaved yesterday one more time before fall.  They love it and feel clean and cool.  They were not concerned that any rain would fall on them during our 45 minute walk this morning.  I zoomed in on this next picture as they looked so cute:

Have a great Wednesday!

Gary

For the sole purpose of getting it to rain today, I washed my car last night

    • Weatherfreak01

Thank you Henley for washing your car last night. I sure hope that works since we really need the rain. Now if you had gotten it waxed and detailed we would get rain for sure, lol.

Praying for a good widespread rain today. So looking forward to the cooler weather.

We are now assured sprinkles just to show up spots on your washed car. :)

My guess, is we’ll get 10 sprinkles. Other than a miracle or the remnants of a hurricane coming north, KC has a dome over it and all the rain that does form, continues to go all around us. Something has to give though eventually…so here’s to hoping!!!!

Clouds have gradually broken apart and the sun is out now in the downtown area. It is an interesting weather day today!!!

Gary, the blog yesterday was titled” Major change in the weather pattern?”. You didnt even mention it today. What are the new models telling us about this “change” ?

    • Stedman

Well, if the high on Friday indeed turns out to be 81, that will be pretty major in my book…and welcome.

    • It’s hard talking about the weather, Dobber, when it never rains, or only sprinkles! And, I titled it “Major Change In The Weather Pattern?”. The Question mark is very important as nothing really different is happening. There will be a cold front moving through tomorrow and another one next week. In between it will sizzle, get hot, and stay dry in our area.

      • I am on my way to work out. I just updated the blog as I think there is an increased chance of a few heavy thunderstorms, possibly severe, later this afternoon if temperatures again approach 100 degrees. Colder air aloft will move over this increasingly unstable air mass.

      • Dobber

That is why I also included it in my quote of your blog. I get the no rain part, what about the most intense temperatures of the year possibly breaking the all time record? I’m not saying it won’t happen or the LRC is wrong. I just want to know what to expect, or rather what you expect to happen.

I got 6″ of rain! Translated, that means one drop hit every 6″. Actually I probably wasn’t even that much.

Gary, I was trying to find the rainfall totals this year at JOCO Executive Airport. Do you know where that is? I suspect most of JOCO is under 10″ of rain for this year.

Lots of clear skies upstream from KC now. Looks like afternoon heating will be plentiful to possibly fire up a few strong to severe storms.

Hey, this is encouraging! Brand new and updated a/o 11:30

YES!!! Given our track record this year, it will likely fire somewhere else today. Nice rainfall totals in Northern Mo. last night and this morning. That’s 2 good events for them in the last 7 days. It’s getting closer!!!

We may not get out of the 70′s Friday in parts of town, more likely NE of here though. Gary, just put 79 for the high just to make us feel good.

The Sun and clear here on over by Lamar Ave. in Overland Park.

Wow Gary! Such good looking dogs and they pose so great for your photos! I can’t get mine to stay still long enough to ever get a good picture. I’m so grateful we might see a little rain, even storms later today. Even if we don’t get a lot, they will have a great affect on peoples mood! Thanks again for all you do here to keep us engaged.

SPC issued a Mesoscale Discussion for areas generally NNW of KC. http://www.spc.noaa.gov/products/md/md1719.html. decent chance of a watch – and maybe RAIN!

  • ginapuff

New mesoscale discussion for north KC…it has been a while since I have seen one of those!

Extreme heat is over, kiss it goodbye baby!

    Severe tstorm watch

  • Theo

You’re dreaming if you think the heat or the drought is over. We will have at least another 5 100+ degree days. We will be in exceptional drought before fall arrives and will stay there until next summer.

  • Emaw

I did’nt say anything about the drought, but triple digits are OVER! How come you’re not out on the tee-box working with Davey?
